made some bad decisions while I was younger and was forced to leave college with one semester left. I am still close to a double major in Accounting and CIS. I have no desire to go back to school. I've never taken out a student loan. I paid off my tuition with summer jobs and working 40+ hours during the school year. I held a 3.95 GPA and that's including each year, before and after I transferred schools. Even the classes I didn't do well in that were non transferable are being factored into that GPA

True, but having money makes achieving happiness either.

I just couldn't logically jibe him getting to the point of actually NEEDING rehab and holding a 3.95 one semester from graduation. I guess it's theoretically possible. Still creates a timeline hole here, though.

He said "choices" which is why I discounted a mental breakdown angle.

A single guy without kids should be able to save around $10-15k in his first year on a 50k salary. And, that's living an awesome lifestyle.

I will caveat my earlier answer saying most friends of mine are making 45-55 starting...as analysts. I know of someone at a local ad agency who makes 25k out of college - that to me is absurd but you can still live on 25k as a single person in a cheap COL area.

You're well above average coming out of college. That is unless you blow it on hookers.

I graduated with a base salary just above that (although I did have a few bonuses and a car allowance). In my first two years, I was able to save enough to buy a new truck, a 12k ring, and about 40k to put a down payment on a house. I didn't have to pay rent or utilities, so that helped a ton, but I saved a crapload at that time and still got to live my life. Wasn't like I was eating Ramen Noodles everyday or anything.

My advice.... live modestly and save up, this will be your best chance to do so. Saving enough to buy a car outright will go a long ways to making your first few years out very enjoyable.

I agree with your first statement, but as much as you'd like to try to justify living on 25k/yr, I just can't believe it. That puts a single guy bringing home 20k/yr after taxes. That's roughly $1,600 a month.

It's hard to live on that.
