Apparently his injury would have kept him from being able to workout for NBA teams. After reading a bunch of his quotes after getting hurt you could tell he was considering coming back.
Kentucky's front court is going to be outrageously stacked next year.

UK frontcourt could be 6-8, 6-9, 6-9, 6-10, 7 feet, 7 feet, 7 feet -- with 5 McD's A-As, plus first-rounder WCS.

Poythress, Willis, Dakari, Lee, Towns, Lyles, and WCS? Is that right? Lots of very good players, I do wonder if either Lee or Poythress would transfer.
Fwiw, none of those guys are close to 7 feet besides WCS.

That front court was way crowded before WCS returned, will be interesting to see what happens now. Lyles is a project but Towns looks ready to play. Their five best players next year could all be 4's or 5's, have to think one of Dakari or Poythress could be gone.
