I'm confused. You use salt to get mud off of your bugs?

Ha! Purging has been scientifically proven at all of the top research institutions. Myth you say?

He said one of the myths involves using salt to clean or purge crawfish before boiling. “Research at the LSU AgCenter has shown that the addition of salt to the wash water provides no significant advantage in cleansing crawfish despite the numerous claims to the contrary.”

Washing crawfish for as little as 10 minutes in water helps remove mud and debris but does little to eliminate intestinal wastes, he said, and salt appears to be of no benefit.

“The only way to significantly reduce size and content of the intestinal tract is with a 12- to 24-hour freshwater purge, which is difficult and impractical for homeowners to do.”

Yes. Myth I do say. Just rinse them thoroughly and boil them. Stop wasting your time with that purging nonsense.

I have eaten straight tails my whole life and I'm still here to type about it. I especially like the loose tails... So much heat in those.

When I boil crawfish, I rinse then in an ice chest till the water goes fro dirty colored to clean. Like others said, adding salt is a waste of time. I like my crawfish free of sticks and dirt. Nothing worse than getting gritty crawfish and finding sticks mixed in.

So many false statements in here

So I'll add more truth to the thread.

The key to keeping the big claws on the crawfish is to dump them in boiling water almost frozen. If they aren't almost frozen, they'll drop their claws as a defense mechanism to allow them to get away faster.

I have never chilled my crawfish and don't notice any missing claws. Maybe they find me safe and comforting. I do hum to them as they are dunked. I go with swing low sweet chariot most times, they love it an hold onto their little claws. The ag center is looking into it.

Cajun injector is really the only way to get the seasoning in the crawfish IMHO

I think I'm just gonna start cooking my crawfish in the microwave like I do my steaks.

That applies to crabs

Not as much for crawfish

I'd never go through the trouble for crawfish anyway
