I can't catch something that doesn't exist.

Cougars are rare here, but they do exist in Louisiana, and yes it is possible that there is a melanistic cougar out there somewhere, but having not seen one in person nor on trail cam, I have no proof.

FYI. There is a very large population of melansitic squirrels in morgan city especially around lake end park, that wasn't there before the 1980's. I bring this up because, if there is a melansistic cougar out there, seems that there would be a population increase over the next decade or so.

A cougar is different than a jaguar or a leopard. Jaguars and leopards suffer from melanism on rare occasions. There's no evidence to suggest that cougars do. We don't have jaguars here and we don't have leopards.

In short, black panthers aren't real. Cougars are real, and exist in Louisiana (see Bossier link)....but they're not black. If you saw a black cat, it was a house cat.

eta: this topic gets beaten to death on bayoubucks...like once a week. It's kind of impressive that it doesn't pop up here more often.

What he was seeing was either trash bags or bears.

By definition, a panther is a large black wild cat. Jaguars and leopards qualify as such.

Gene studies say no.

While true, I'm not one to say it isn't possible. There was once a time when geneticists believed albino or amelanistic cougars did not exist either.

I used to hunt between Woodville MS and Natchez MS... which is basically on the state line for LA / MS. We had them there. Caught a few pics on a trail cam. But, like all cats, they dont stay in 1 place too long. They keep moving.

I see no reason why they wouldnt be in LA at some point. And there have been sightings with pictures.

edit: NEVERMIND. lol... it was a cougar.

As much as this topic comes up on this board, one would think that 1) realized that you are seeing something that has never been documented and 2)If you see a large black cat, you damn need to take pics if possible, look for tracks, etc...
