True story , my ten year old won his school spelling bee and competed in the regional saturday in lafayette. In the third or fourth round a black girl was actually given the word "uppity", i cringed and looked around. There were numerous people just looking down at the floor and shaking their heads ...

White Privilege: Not having to hear people snicker in the audience when you get the word "uppity" in a spelling bee.

Check it.

It is a legit word found in English dictionaries right? Why would it be precluded from use in a spelling bee?

BTW, did you really cringe?

I'm white and my kid is about to turn 13. Child gets uppity with me and mom all the time. We call her uppity sometimes.

What's next: cringe at the word "stupid?"

Because you've been conditioned to. Sad.
