Why are airports full of strange people?

I hate airports

I also wonder how the majority of these people can afford to fly.

It's a busy, crowded place with a ton of people you'll hang out with for a while and then never see again.

One of the few times that you have the entire country's demographics in one place. It may have a slight upward bias on the wealth scale given the cost of flying, but almost everyone can save up to fly somewhere if they need to.

For me, it is the clearest example of the 'bubble' I live in. It also makes me realize the intelligence level of the average American.
