Settle an argument: Which is preferable, including a leading zero or not?

My roommate and I have been vehemently arguing over this while doing our homework.

For example, would you write the decimal version of -21/100 as:

-0.21

or

-.21

I am a big proponent of the leading zero (-0.21). She feels perfectly fine with leaving that zero off.

What say you?

Lead with zero. The professors prefer it and it is easier to read next to whole numbers.

I support the leading zero because it helps point out the decimal so its not confused as a whole number

I'm too busy curing cancer to worry about some dirty zero that doesn't change the meaning of my value.

Leasing zero. I don't see how this is even a matter of debate.
