Hurricane Katrina's effect on basketball recruiting

Let me preface this with saying that I'm certainly not a pro at following recruiting. I'll pay attention at times, but certainly not as much as most of you guys.
I originally thought about this with regard to basketball, but I'm thinking it probably relates to football also.
What kind of effect has Hurricane Katrina had on the talent in the state? Didn't DJ Augustin go to brother Martin then transfer to a Texas high school and ultimately sign with Texas in 2006? Not saying that we would have gotten him, but surely this happened to many other kids too.
Is it strictly a coincidence that LSU has had it's worse 5-6 year stretch of basketball immediately following the storm? Are things improving now that New Orleans seems to returning back to normal?

college basketball recruiting has nothing to do with locale but more to do with coaches and AAU connections and how guys are used in the offense to showcase skills.
katrina probably cost LSU Augustine, but he did himself better going to UT. At the time we had John Brady/Trent Johnson.

Hurricane Katrina actually, believe it or not, turned out better for recruiting than believed to be

I am honestly not sold on this. It appeared to say something about Brady's recruiting of players from La. outside of BR.

I have a hard time believing that we still go 17-15 in the 2006-2007 season with Augustin on the roster, and could have helped us out the following year as well. And Brady was already fired by the time Augustin left Texas.

I meant it is coincidence.
It is a coincident. Besides Augustin, i dont think it effected anyone elses recruitment. Its not like we didnt have any big time prospects here these past 6 years or so. We most def did. They jus didnt come here because: Trent Johnson didnt make an effort in getting them, or because they went and played for a major D1 bball program like Georgetown.
The reason we were so successful before that with Temple, Big Baby, Tyrus Thomas, and Taz was because of Butch Pierre and Collis Temple. Temple had them playing together for years on his AAU team and was an LSU legend himself. He steered that ship to LSU. And the only position that team was lacking was a great 2 guard that could fill it up... i.e Marcus Thornton.

Understood. I couldn't think of anyone outside of augustin that obviously left town because of the storm.
I can't help but think that there are kids in the Houston or Atlanta areas that were younger and they never made it back into the state. I fully understand that BBall recruiting isn't strictly regional or in state, but it certainly lowers your chance with these kids if they're out of state.

quote:It did not start with Brady. LSU has historically been unable to lure almost all major recruits from New Orleans metro area regardless of whether the coach was Maravich, Brown, Brady or Trent. Among those missed- Rick Robey, Dwayne Bryant, Augustine, Greg Monroe, Craig Victor, Kerry Kittles, Jaren Jackson, Perry McDonald, Donald Royal, Shan Foster, Eugene Edgerson, Neil Reed, Melvin Simon, Hollis Price, Greedy Daniels Duane Spencer ( transferred to LSU for last two years)

As to second part - Brady signees from Louisiana outside Baton Rouge - not a bad haul
Stromile Swift
Antonio Hudson
Torris Bright
Darrel Mitchell
Tasmin Mitchell (okay this may be a stretch)
Terry Martin ( transfer)
Juemichael Young

Les did fine. We won in 07 with the majority of scholarship players coming from oos. Really LA wasn't stacked until 2011 under Miles.

Dwight Lewis wasnt a huge recruit though. We never even offered him.

This kind of scenario probably plays out around the country. Regardless of all of these things the coaching staff still needs to recruit them and then coach them up.
I have never understood the pithy comments about Brady signing a group of BR players. That was where the talent was at the time and they signed them. What should they have done, by passed the BR guys to try to sign players from other areas just to prove they could do it?

yea, he was only committed to Kansas at one point. Lol. But not a big recruit i guess.
LSU definitely offered him.

Considered he was around the #50 SG in the country and a 3* player, I wouldnt call him a major recruit.
And I checked his rivals page and didnt have an offer list. Also checked out a few articles and it said that LSU backed off of him after he de committed from Kansas.

Isn't Kelly oubre from Nola. What's his deal
Posted on 3/14/14 at 9:43 pm to lsufishnhunt
Trent Johnson refused to recruit, that is the reason we had our struggles.
