Can the MT recommend any? I'd ask the OT, but, yea.
Something preferably more than, 'believe in yourself' and 'get 8 hours of sleep'.

Believe in yourself, get 5 hours of sleep and work 3 hours extra.

All I read are self help books. I love them.
Start with "How to win friends and influence people".

I liked No More Mr. Nice Guy, it's really helped me figure out a lot of things I've been doing wrong in life.

Sounds corny but this actually did change my life and how I lived it:

I have a ton. I absolutely love them. I'll make a list and post it later

I have a suggestion that is not specifically a self development book. I am reading a book called Washington's Crossing and it provides a great detail of everyday life and some key battles during the Revolutionary War. The author provides a narrative of how life was for the civilians and for both the revolutionaries and the British/German armies. Just reading what I have so far as provided plenty of motivation to make more of my time and days, considering the hell people went through over 200 years ago to get the U.S. to where we are today.
By no means does it teach you how to further develop yourself, but it has provided much more motivation to me than motivational books I have previously read.

i just started the intelligent investor on the advice of warren buffett (obviously not personal advice). it's pretty good so far. not a true self development book, but it goes a lot into the investor's mindset.

Hit the ground running - Jason Jennings
What go you here won't get you there- Marshall Goldsmith
Talent Isn't Everything (personal favorite) - Geoff Goldman
Jim Collins is solid too- "How the Mighty Fall" and "Good to Great"
And if you are or plan to be managing people:
Carrot Principle
5 Dysfunctions of a Team

The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson
Read this one first. As others have said, it is mindset no magic formula.

Anyone try the 48 laws of power? I'm enjoying it right now.

7 Habits of Highly... - Covey
Good to Great - Jim Collins
I have several others on this list and they are currently in my queue.
I'd recommend How Full is Your Bucket? by Tom Rath to everyone. It takes about 4 hours to read and is a simple concept, but was one of my favorite reads.

The OT and the NT. Best to take advice in the form of "...do NOT do THIS" like the commandments (Lex Talionis - eye for eye) or the NT, golden rule, "...do unto others as you would do unto yourself".
Self help books are garbage because they usually offer advice in the form of "....do THIS, to be happy", or "...take these steps to be successful financially". And these books are written by 'experts' (usually in their own minds), who may or may not take their own advice.

Treat people right, work hard, and think before you act. Everything will work out in your favor I promise.

"It's Your Ship"
This book is required reading for all partners at our firm. It is more of a managerial book, but has some great points in it. The premise is this guy took the shittiest ship in the navy and made it the best. He is well spoken and you don't feel like you're reading some cheesedick book written by a pyramid scheme guy on how to get rich quick. I highly recommend trying it out.

I asked the librarian where the self help section was but she told me to find it myself....
