There's a lot of concrete in D.C., it's impressively hot. Plan on spending half a day at The Newseum. I've been to D.C. 3 times, and it's one of the best things to see. Air and Space museum is always fun, and the Holocaust museum is popular.

Obviously the Metro is the most popular way to get around, but it won't take you to Georgetown. The Circulator will, and it's only a dollar a ride. LINK

Have fun man, D.C. is probably my favorite place in the country.

ETA: I should also add that if you contact your Representative or Senator NOW they'll set you up for a Capital tour. One of the coolest things I've done there.

You can just get a SMART card and pay for both the Metro and the Circulator. I used both to get to Georgetown and Tyson's Corner.

It is also worth going to Founding Farmers not far from the WH.

I don't get why that place gets so much love. There are literally 20-30 restaurants I would rather go to.

It gets padded because of their whole green/sustainable menu. I had a good meal there and enjoyed the atmosphere. I was on a solo trip and ate at the bar. It was well suited for meating people.

I am so glad I live close enough to make the visit during the Cherry Blossoms in April. That is a site to see as well as many other trees in blossom. DC gets a bad rap for things but if you have any interest in History, there is no better city in this country to visit.

DC as an all around city is an excellent place and I think people should definitely come visit and check it out.

I sometimes take for granted that I can walk by the White House at lunch on a nice day

Best Art:

Museum of Modern Art
National gallery of art

Both are AC with places to sit inside.

Worth adding:

National Museum of Natural History
Air and space museum on the Mall.
National Archives (Declaration of Independence, etc.)

You need to contact your congressman right now and get you reservation to tour the Capitol and White House. They do that and the reservations for tours fill up very fast - like three or four months in advance.

There is a circular bus tour that passes lots of places of interest. It goes out to Georgetown and Arlington Cemetery. You can get off the bus any scheduled stop and then get on another tour bus later to continue the big circle the scheduled stops. I think it starts and ends at Grant Station. There is a good food court in the basement of Grant station with multiple fast food places. There is a brochure that lists the stops they make.

The circular bus tour is worth it if for nothing else than a resting seat for a while.

Different?

National Bonsai Museum

I've lived here since 2000 and still visit the National Cathedral from time to time. The changing of the guard at the Tomb is a must-see.

Honestly I'm a bit bummed on the Smithsonian. Check it out but honestly I'd recommend the Library of Congress instead. The Botanical Gardens is kinda neat too.

Outside DC you can hit the Aquarium in Baltimore which for my money is one of the best. To the south the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico is really good, as is the NRA Museum near Fairfax. The NRA museum is IMHO one of the world's great firearms collections and it is very tastefully done, nothing political about it.

If you're tired of museums, have a car and want to kill an hour or so drive to Gravelly Point. It sits right off the end of the runway at Reagan National airport and watching the planes come in and take off is oddly mesmerizing.

For another off the beaten path memorial that is kinda neat, check out the Roosevelt Memorial on Roosevelt Island. It's a short hike from a parking lot but it is literally tucked away in the woods. Not kidding. It's in the middle of the Potomac so is very accessible. Speaking of the Potomac, Great Falls can be impressive.

Jefferson Memorial is best seen at dusk fwiw.

definitely underrated place, my wife and i used to love it

every now and then, if it was summer, we'd see deer there. i used to love running the trail that began there in both directions- either down toward the airport, across from the mall, or west toward great falls with a bunch of runoff waterfalls from arlington every several hundred yards

I'm flying up to DC in the morning, and I'm so glad I found this thread. I haven't been to DC since a high school field trip. Really looking forward to it, especially after reading all the suggestions.
