If I had the upfront cash, I would have gotten a nexus 5. Pure android is the best. Since I didn't, I have the HTC one. It is fantastic!
I believe the successors for the htc one and s4 are coming soon.

In terms of experience the nexus 5 is number one because of the pure android experience.
But you sacrifice some things in terms of hardware so Google could reach a price point.
The LG G2 is what the nexus 5 is based off of, with top of the line hardware. The HTC one and s4 are solid too.
The s4 is a little gimmicky, but you don't have to use the gimmick features.
The nexus 5 is the best phone if you're buying off contract or with something like straight talk.
You can root the s4 or g2 and install vanilla android if you want the hardware.
If you're rich and want the best of both worlds, you can buy a Google play edition HTC one or s4 for $650...

Moto X is the best overall. Mostly plain Google with great additions (touchless control, active notifications and excellent battery)
Nexus 5 if you want straight Google with easy root.
Moto x screen size is better to me at 4.7" to the nexus 5 5" although the nexus has a higher ppi

i returned my third droid razr maxx hd the other day because the vibrate/haptic feedback hardware kept failing.
they sent me a droid maxx and it's an all-around great phone. much better camera and screen + faster (although not the fastest processor) than previous iteration. and same incredible battery that drew me to the first gen maxx hd.
we'll see. i figure this will get me through the next generation of BS for free then i can jump on real improvements.
