Honestly, in this day I don't know of many companies that will hire a 37 year old with technological skills. There are too many kids straight out of college that will be like due to age and present day educations over a 37 year old. What other skills do you have

Other than plumbing, pipe fitters and (especially) service technicians are pretty much recession proof.

There is a vacuum in the skilled labor market being created by the retirement of the baby boomers. While trade unions do like to get young guys that will give them many years of service, they also tend to take a good many guys in their 30's. the logic seems to be that those people are a little more mature and tend to drop out of the program less because they typically have something to lose.

This isn't true. I'm in my 30's, hire people in IT and we don't hire people because of their age. We find that older people are more realistic while 20 year old interviewees come in acting like they're big shots. the 20 year olds tend to ask for more money as well. Take in to account that very few people in IT are hired on and stay on for the duration of their career anymore.(Frankly in IT you have to look for a new job every 5 years or you're probably not being paid enough money.) If he's any good he'll find a job in Baton Rouge.

What about jobs in nursing homes, hospice, medical supply companies, hospitals, health insurance companies–what you did the past few years DID amount to a job, and the skills you gained might be useful in some medical field. What about calling some of the companies you dealt with in taking care of your mom? They surely know you.

And maybe give this a thought: funeral homes. I was at one on Sunday for a viewing of my mother, who passed away last week. You could do worse than a job there--chauffeur, etc.

I think i need to clarify some things. First when someone gets cancer. If it is a friend. It is easy to go about your business and be like that sucks. And not worry to much about it. But when it is your mother. That takes a little bit more precedence than someone you just know casually. So when she was going through chemo/radiation etc. I took care of her full time.

Eventually yes there were agencies that could come out, and charger her ppls health and help her out. I have been working. It is not like i am a dead beat. But the jobs i have been working at are part time retail jobs. If anything i think that that has hurt me finding a permanent position somewhere.

When someone sees that for the past few years all you have done was work minimum wage type part time jobs. They assume that you don't qualify for their job. It has been more of a hindrance when i put that on my application. If i am lucky and get an interview somewhere. I can explain my situation. But most employers seem to just look at my resume, look at where i work now. And think nah, and next. But it isn't that i don't work. It is that i cannot find a permanent position somewhere. Just temp jobs. Which sucks.

I want to go back into a permanent position again. Not as easy as some of you think. Most places don't even bother to set up an interview with you.
