Has CPM recruited for small ball? Size indicates so, but why no small ball?

Judging by size, we are definitely a small ball team. Comparing last year's lineup to some of the better offensive teams and CWS teams last year, we were extremely tiny. I know size isn't everything, but you gotta have a little more balance to the lineup.

ULL--------6'0 201
UCLA-------6'1 206
UNC--------6'1 192
IU---------6'1 207
USCe-------6'0 197
OrSt-------6'1 205

LSU- 5'11 185. Throw out Jones who was way above average and it is closer to 5'10 180.

I know this isn't the 90s, but if you're gonna keep recruiting tiny guys, your'e gonna have to play Augie Garrido ball.

What's interesting is this year's team is a little bigger. I wonder if PM is preparing for the new baseballs. Either that or we couldn't help but get bigger as we were as small as it gets.

So 1" and 12 lbs matters when they are in HS? Come on man! They will get bigger and stronger throughout college . And you answered your own question , size isn't everything.

Well considering our 3 smallest guys last year were our 3 best hitters, I'm not sure I would be so worried.

The answer is that we got shitkicked against Stony Brook because we fielded a defense that had about 6 first basemen playing. We now have something that more resembles a balanced team. Mainieri discovered that you can hide one or two bad gloves, but not six. To be clear, the perceived difference in size is a function of defense, not really of offense in this specific instance.

You win the award for meaningless thread for the 5th consecutive year. Truly an inspiration.

Size does not equal bat speed nor hitting prowess. By your standard, Wes Rea for MSU should be hitting 30 bombs a season and what he really is is a large, relatively slow, gap hitter. I would prefer taller guys at 1B, SS, and 3B than shorter guys, but that is for defensive purposes. Stevenson ain't small, either, he appears to have put on some good weight.

You are really obsessed over the player's size aren't you. I remember you bringing this up last year.

How does small size indicate small ball? Mason Katz isn't a big guy but has plenty of power. Mike Fontenot had plenty of power while at LSU and could even run the ball out of the park when he was in the bigs. Bregman isn't a huge dude, but has plenty of power in his bat. You are making a blanket assumption that just because a guy isn't 6'3" 225, he doesn't have power. You really couldn't be further from being accurate.

I think you should first define your definition of small ball.

Katz, Bregman, Ibarra, and McMullen all had over .460 slugging percentage.

None of those guys will ever be described as big.

He seems to prefer smaller right handed players for some reason.

I could end up writing pages and pages on this but I want to keep it short and sweet. Mainieri has been forced to go after athletes who can play multiple positions. Sure you have your occasional 6'3 220 masher but those guys get eaten up by draft picks early on.

The day of steroids in college and recruiting DH's is over. The only way to succeed it to adapt and survive.

The freshmen class of Fraley, Roberston, Zardon, and Dean fit the 5'10-6'0 mold. None are big boppers, all are well above average athletes who can excel at the college level.

Fraley, Stevenson, and Laird are all natural centerfielders but can play any position.

Bregman, Robertson, and Zardon are all natural shortstops who can play any middle infield spot.

so small size means we should play small ball. What great logic.

LSU- 5'11 185.
Are these stats already provided somewhere or did you compute them yourself?

If you computed them yourself, I'm very impressed and at the same time I'm a little worried you might have a too much free time on your hands.

UNC was the only team at the CWS that had more HRs than LSU did during the season (only 2 HRs more) and they played 3 more games than LSU.

Indiana was the only team at the CWS that averaged more HR per game than LSU.

UCLA may have averaged 6'1 206 but they won it all despite the fact that they were like 190th in the nation in HR per game.

Size really doesn't matter, lots of power hitters aren't big guys. It's not like all the 90's guys were huge either. My high school coach played for LSU in the 90's and he's like 5'8
