signed josh smith to a max contract

was his a max deal? sorry I'm not too familiar with NBA cap #s.

Either way, I wasn't a fan of that move (or a good # of his FA moves)

Detroit, Charlotte, Sacramento, and most bottom feeders have the same things in common: Firing coaches every other Thursday.

A revolving door at head coach never works. They end up turning over the roster every few years to bring in the new guy's "type of player," eventually falling into a perpetual rebuild, pretending that next year is finally the year all those lottery picks they've collected actually turns into something worthwhile in the standings.

I knew the deal, just wasn't sure if 13-14M was considered max $$.

Thanks for clearing that up

no, don't worry about it

I'm kind of curious about the NBA salary #s/caps in general.

My point was that keeping a coach too long and firing coaches too early are both bad things. When I said the Pels should take notes I was referring to this single season, not the trend of Detroit firing coaches left and right. That it's okay to give a coach his walking papers. I realize that it probably won't happen due to all of the injuries that the Pels have faced this seas.

typically anything on a 2nd contract that's in that 14-15M range is just called "max" deal

Predictable that your obsession would lead you to believe my post had anything to do with Monty.

Cheeks got fired after 50 games. Thats stupid

the frick is cheeks going to do with drummond, monroe, and josh smith being promised a starting spot by dumars?

play josh smith at the 3 of course

and then add in brandon jennings chucking the shite out of the ball and a rookie at the 2, and you're going to have some ugly arse basketball without much variability or ability to play prettier

Its was a clusterfrick almost everybody saw coming from a mile away.

And the thing is, in the right situation, I think Josh Smith is a really nice player. Just not playing the 3 on a team with Monroe and Drummond.

Jennings is just terrible, though. A volume shooting PG who shoots sub-40% every single year is never leading a team to anything good.

Now Dumars, with his job on the line, has to decide whether or not to trade Monroe cause nobody is gonna free him of Smith's contract at this point.

It was evident to anybody who spent more than five minutes watching the Pistons that Cheex needed to go. Of course, he wasn't exactly a great hire to begin with.

you can win with a guy like jennings, but not having him surrounded by josh smith and andre drummond, without any legit outside threats

if they had magically been able to acquire iggy instead of smith, they'd be in a much better spot. better perimeter defending and a 2nd facilitator for jennings/monroe. they'd still need an outside shooter, but maybe KCP turns into that

jennings and smith are versatile/good players, but flawed ones

now...had they moved monroe for kyle korver, smith/drummond would be an interesting front court

The main problem is...you simply cannot even remotely contend when your three best players cannot be on the floor simultaneously at crunch time. That's why I was more in favor of an Iguodala than Josh Smith.

That said...they aren't even competitive most nights and much of that falls on Cheex. The offense goes stagnant for long stretches, Monroe has been treated like a glorified garbage man on offense, multiple in-game incidents with players, defense is terrible, no improvement defensively, benched KCP for Singler at the 2, wildly inconsistent rotations...time to go, cut your losses.

The Pistons as constructed are in no position to contend for the East, but being on the outside looking in is bullshite and a complete failure.

I love Monroe, but the Pistons need to move him. They can improve tremendously by trading him.

They also have incompetent GMing involved

Teams like PHI/TOR/MIL/ORL have righted their ships after they finally brought in new GMs.

Uljiri has turned rudy gay into vasquez/salmons/Hayes

They'll probably decline salmons to free up more cap space(or flip him+Amir) and if uljiri can get rid of gay he can ditch fields as well.

That gives them 20+ Mil in cap space plus an already solid young core(Lowry/Derozan/Valucias/Ross)

Hinkie for PHI is very much an advanced numbers geek which is the trend these days

He'll have two lottery picks+30 mil in cap+MCW/Turner/Young

Not bad for your first year.

ORL has Oladipo/Harris/Vucevic/Harkless on cheap deals and will have trade assets in Nelson/Afflalo+Cap space

New bucks GM got rid of Jennings for a cheaper option in Knight(who has improved) and a nice young frontcourt of Henson/Sanders(when healthy)

Also some good pieces in giannis/illyasova/Mayo(The later two will probably be moved when they get wiggins/parker)

They're all in much better shape than 1-2 years ago
