For me it's a place where it's not all that unexpected. At airports and on planes I've run into random people that I know. Mostly people from places where I used to work that travel a lot.

Ran into my mom's best friend at the Smithsonian museum next to the Hope Diamond.

Told my mom I saw her friend and she didn't believe me.

After I brought her over she was shocked. Neither knew the other was going to D.C.

Pledge brother of mine who is as country as you get in a bar in downtown Pittsburgh. Hadn't spoken to him in years.

Weirdest connection though was a guy I met in Beijing who dated my sister's freshman roommate for 5 years.

In our case it wasn't the place so much as the timing. One Mardi Gras maybe 20 years ago, there was an aircraft carrier docked in New Orleans and they were allowing civilians to come on board and tour. My husband, son, and I walked down to the dock from the French Quarter to see the ship, along with a hundred or so other people. As we were traveling between decks on the huge aircraft elevator, we looked behind us and there were my MIL and her cousin.

As my husband said, if we had tried to plan to meet her on the ship, between the crowds in the Quarter, the number of people on the ship, and lack of cell phones with which to co-ordinate on site, it never would have worked.
