I went to a local medical clinic today :noherp: and was kind of grossed out to see a waiting room just packed with folks who all looked like they had the flu....frickers were all throwing up, shivering with fever, etc....grossed me out so bad, I just rescheduled my appointment and left...

my question is, how the hell do doctors and nurses keep from constantly catching illnesses from patients that come in with this kind of thing all day?....

We're around it nonstop so our immunity is through the roof. People that are germophobes and constantly wash their hands are the ones that get sick.

They wear masks and clean their hands and rooms after each patient

they probably get sick often when they first start, until their body builds up antibodies.

you can't get the same cold/flu twice.

I'm pretty sure that after 2 months at Children's, I'll never get sick again.

I'm also pretty sure I was sick for about 6/8 weeks that I was at Children's.

When I was a brand new Peds nurse I got sick all the time. Eventually built up a stronger immunity.

I go still get sick but get over it fairly quickly. I also exercise regularly; learn to manage my stress; get the flu shot every year. Am up to date on all my immunizations(including the whooping cough booster shot you need as an adult).

And on our floor our kids are placed on various isolation depending on what they have and I follow the rules on what to wear for each isolation. I also wash my hands very frequently and use the hospital hand sanitizer during my shift.

they wash their hands all the time, they slowly develop antibodies, like the kid who ate dirt and now rarely (if ever) gets sick as an adult

When you graduate medical school they give you a shot that makes you immune to 99% of known diseases.

Its part of the reward for getting the MD
