Yea, New Orleans isn't located on the coast at all. You could live in Bay St Louis and drive the hour to the city everyday, down Hwy 90 is a beautiful drive as well. It makes it tough though since most of what NOLA is about is the night, so you'd miss out on that. If you made enough you could rent an apartment in the city then live your southern coastal charm in BSL.

I love New Orleans and will be moving to Ocean Springs for work next year, BUT, you are high if you think the coastal living is even comparable. The beaches surrounding Charleston are less than half the drive and far superior. I loved living in Charleston and would go back in a heartbeat if my wife wasn't dead set on staying moderatley close to the kids (@ LSU).

The high crime areas are more defined and isolated than NOLA with a highly functional criminal justice system.

Only bad thing about Charleston is the half-back invasion. Yankees that went to Florida and are now retreating are settling in the area.
