Is there any way to buy stocks/ETFs without going through a broker?

I've got MF's through retirement accounts, and I know there are some companies that will sell their stocks directly to consumers, but is there any way, preferably online, where I can buy and sell stocks directly without incurring fees and whatnot?
TIA

There are hundreds of companies that are willing to let you trade stocks without being compensated for it.

Vanguard charges no fees for their ETFs
(can buy any stocks with them as well, fees vary depending on the amount of Vanguard assets you have with them. )

Schwab charges $8.95 a trade regardless of size, are always accessible and able to answer any question (they patched me through to an estate expert the other day at no cost), have a highly functionable website, and make it very easy to transfer funds to/from your bank account. Hard to beat.

Wouldn't you have to become a member of a stock exchange to do that?
My guess is the commissions you pay a broker will be less.
InteractiveBrokers is a good discount broker. I think its $1 a trade.

E*Trade has some commission-free ETFs, but they charge a penalty for selling in less than 30 days.
