Any other "old guy" in Memphis on this date in 1985 for the Liberty Bowl?

What a disaster that was. At the time "Memphis Memorial Stadium" was only about 20 yrs old but it looked about 50. Similar to the old "Sombrero" in Tampa.Baylor won 21-7 in a game that really wasn't that close.

Norman Jefferson ran a punt back for a td to put LSU up 7-0 and then it was all Baylor. They used two quarterbacks for the whole game alternating each one after each play.Jeff Wickersham who had an uncanny knack to come up a yard short on third(or fourth as the case may have been) down passes, fittingly ended his career with a 6 yard completion on 4th and 7.

It was cold and the longer the game went on the wind seemed to just roar in off the Mississippi.I've only been to 8 LSU bowl games and without a doubt that was the worst one.

Strange team. 9-2-1 but "seemed" more like a 7-4 one.Other than the Vanderbilt game in Nashville the team just got stuck in the mud and had to hang on for dear life every week or punch one in late (like the Tulane game) to get some breathing room.

Wasn't this the game that LSU let all the players drive on their own to Memphis? Also, didn't they go apeshit all over the city the entire week leading up to the game?

I was in Tiger Band. That bowl sucked beyond comprehension.

That 97 Indy Bowl was pretty brutal as far as the weather goes, but we did win the game.

I went since I lived only 100 miles from Memphis at the time. Crappy game. Mostly remember seeing one of my frat brothers going berserk in the stands due to high level of inebriation.

I watched that game on the TV in my parent's bedroom. Was stoked when Jefferson ran back the punt, then settled into three hours of misery. Our bowl record was atrocious in the 80s.

They've put a little money into that old stadium. I've never bad trouble finding parking at Liberty Memorial, and it seems to be kept fairly clean and decent. It's an old "modernist" stadium design that would feel Busch league next to today's Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge though.

Memphis gets freakishly cold and windy sometimes around this time of year compared to other southern cities.

I'm going to see Miss State beat Rice at Liberty Memorial this year. I hope the weather doesn't suck too badly.

Yep, coldest I have ever been at a football game.

I remember the halftime show was a re-enactment of an attack on some US fort by the British army (or something like that). The LSU student section started yelling "defense, defense". Definitely the highlight of the night.

Oddly enough when speaking of their record, They were a missed 24 yard FG away (against Bama) from being 10-1 and playing in a different bowl game. Ronnie Lewis missed a chip shot 24 yarder leading to a 21-21 tie.

Don't know how long ago it was, but I was at the Liberty Bowl for the game between Tulane and Colorado.

I know...has nothing to do with your query.

Happy Holidays

Me!! My first bowl game.
Thought we would roll when John Ehret's Norman Jefferson took the PR back for 6.

Shocked they shut down dalton - James gang .

Freaking cold as crap too

EDIT: I was thinking of the '78 Libert Bowl v. Missouri. I was there. Guess that means I am really old.

It was cold

I have a picture from the MISSOURI game in my office. It's beforehand, so we're all smiling, but the wind is blowing the pom-poms and we are all wrapped up.

What I remember most about the game is the poor attendance. Small stadium, but not many people there. We were sitting behind the LSU bench. Probably the best seats I've ever had for an LSU game. Terrible day all around for our team.

I was there and definitely one of the worst bowl games I have ever been to. To me. Cholly Mac's 1978 bowl game against Mizzou in the Liberty Bowl was better than that game and that is saying alot. I dont know how many bowl games I ve been too . First was on New Year's eve at the Sun Bowl when Bill Walsh and Stanford took it to us , , I believe Guy Benjamin was their QB and we had Woodley and

Ensminger but it seemed that Mac relied a little too heavy on the defense that day. Anyway agreed that the game against Baylor in the Liberty Bowl was the worst that Ive been at but I was not at the rain game against PSU in the Capitol One Bowl nor was I at the MNC against Bama, so I havent been at the worst of all times.

Visiting my parents and they have this. The first things dad remembered were the punt return and that the players drove themselves to the game. And the miserable weather.

Was there and it was miserably cold. And like 91TIGER said, Cody Carlson. He picked us apart.

I was at the 85 game. Worst game weather I ever attended (Miami game in Tiger Stadium was a close second). My wife still complains about the cold. Before the game a player told us to bet the house on Baylor.
