Im no architect or contractor, but what if you made part of the Western wall one of those firewood holders. So in essence part of the wall would be an area to store firewood. Two birds, one stone

GG, is the western wall one of the 30' walls? If so, Blackened's recommendation could have some merit I would think. Unless you have plans for the whole 30' of wall.

This may be more elementary than what you are looking for, but if you go with a gas one, get a ventless model. The heat comes into the room. You could even put it on one of the walls against the house so the heat would emanate out.

The West wall is 14. Contractor just hit me with all of this info though we've discussed it ad nauseum beforehand. They are ready to move on it. They've reached that point in the construction. He apparently left out some important info about a gas fireplace. I want one that looks nice and not like one of them electric roll in things. It's going to be brick and I want nice looking logs.

Now, he tells me that if I get one with heavy BTUs are whatever, it needs to be ventless which means I could never change my mind. Everyone knows it's a woman's prerogative to change her mind for crying out loud.

BO, I know just what you're suggesting and it's a good one, though it's not possible to do that at this point. I suppose I could just put some large wood holder inside next to it so getting wood would only happen sparingly. I won't have a covered area to keep the extra wood and I was told not to put it near the house due to termites...well, and critters.

I'd go with the gas fireplace--they pump out plenty of heat, in my experience. No wood storage, no fiddling with lighting, no wood smoke to irritate your eyes. The gas inserts take up less space, too.

Unless you were planning to cook on it--then wood is the way to go. Hell, build a pizza oven into that western wall!
