FWIW

Saban was not a hot commodity when LSU hired him and the fans feelings at LSU in 2000 were pretty tepid after he dropped that game to UAB.

Obviously it turned out to be an absolute home run hire but looking back at Saban as the guy who lost the heads up bowl game to Gerry Dinardo's LSU team and wasn't dominant at Michigan State makes the point of how hard it can be to tell who will be great at their next job and who won't.

I was thrilled when LSU hired Saban. I followed him a bit while he was at MSU, and you could tell he was developing into a stud head coach. At the time he was at MSU, Michigan was very strong under Carr, Notre Dame had a ton of great players at the end of Holtz's tenure, and Ohio State was very talented as well.

Despite having far less talent, he was finding ways to beat those teams when those teams were all top 25 caliber.
