Worst bowl game to go to, from the perspective of the player

If I were a college football player, I would want to go to a bowl that is in a town with a nice climate, with plenty of cool stuff to do for the week that I was there. I would like to maybe play in a cool stadium and maybe be in a town with cool sights to check out.
That having been said, could there be any worse bowl to go to than the Compass Bowl in Birmingham?? What the hell is there fun to do in Birmingham for a week at the end of December? And Legion Field might be the biggest shithole that ever existed and its in a crappy neighborhood. Who could possibly get excited about going there for a bowl?
My top 5 worst bowl sites:
1) Birmingham
2) Mobile
3) El Paso
4) Charlotte
5) Shreveport
Unless someone can convince me otherwise that these places would be great to visit in December/January....

SUN bowl is the worst.
Every year you hear the players and teams complaining.
Just the worst.
What a dump.

I would rather play in Charlotte than Boise.

Whatever bowl is in Idaho is the worst

Pinstripe last year was the worst

I agree with you about the stadium, but there is plenty to do around here. Maybe not for the typical college aged kids, but it could be worse.

..... Really?
Charlotte is an awesome city
Thinking Shreveport is better than Charlotte....LOL

Good list, but Shreveport is by far the worst of those for me.
El Paso has a good climate and is scenic at least.
Mobile has the beach close by. Potential for nice weather.
Charlotte is at least a big city.
Birmingham is bad, but not as bad as Shreveport.
Others:
Detroit would suck pretty bad.

Legion Field
Since we are bringing facilities into the mix, the Beef O Brady's Bowl in St. Pete would suck.

I had a friend who played in the Idaho bowl in Boise one year and he said it sucked. Nothing to do and cold as frick.

It's all based on perspective.
I think it would suck to travel to a colder local than your school.
Also, if you're a team like USC or Notre Dame and going to El Paso; Georgia and going to Shreveport, you'll be disappointed.
This year, I would say Maryland would be most disappointed.
They're an ACC team moving to the Big 10 and playing Marshall 10 miles from home (still in the cold weather) in a stadium used for soccer and worthy of demolition.

Idaho should be #1, and it's not even close.

Charlotte seems like a fairly decent place for a bowl game as far as cities go, although the game is sometimes pretty cold. It's not a vacation destination like New Orleans, Nashville, or San Diego, but it's not nearly as bad as some others.
Having spent time in most of the bowl cities, for me the worst by far is El Paso. I find it very ugly aesthetically and disagree that it's scenic. The city seems much smaller than its 19th ranked population. It's a very working class/Walmart type of city with very few upscale neighborhoods.
Boise is probably second. It's a much nicer city than El Paso overall, but it's winter and who wants to go to an above average city for a bowl game in the winter?
Both cities are also predominantly one race/culture and have very few black people. To me that is a negative, others may disagree.

The Godaddy bowl has to be the least favorite for the players. It is in mobile and it's in Janurary. That means a whole extra month of practice and they dont get to go home for Christmas or New Years. If I were a player I'd be fine with missing those holidays if I were in a BCS bowl, but not the Godaddy bowl.

El Paso is actually a pretty great bowl site in the Winter. Boise is much worse.

I'd think Boise would be the worst. Nobody wants to get rewarded for a bowl game by having to go play in ice and 0 degree temperatures.

I went to the Sun Bowl once and it was beyond shitty. Add to the horrible city of El Paso, it's cold there and right across the river from a huge shanty town and the crime infested city of Juarez.

isn't/wasn't there a detroit bowl? or did I hallucinate that...

I think this year for Arkansas State, they have to feel apathetic about their bowl game.
not only will this be the third year in a row to play here for a bowl, but they also had to play here during the regular season against the South Alabama Jags.
there is a parade for the fans during the week leading up to the game but it in no way compares to the real Mardi Gras atmosphere of this city.
-there are less people to watch it.
-there are fewer bands that march in it.
-fewer floats.
-small parade route.
I'm sure it doesn't matter to those folks though.
oh, and I wouldn't recommend going to Gulf Shores or Dauphin Island. Not exactly a good idea to go to the beach in early January.

They used to have a bowl game in Detroit didn't they? Isn't it amazing that an urban blight bowl wasn't a bigger hit?
