I'm currently considering the following:

Primary usage: 100-300 yards
Caliber: .308
Stock: walnut
Barrel/action: Win M70 Compact FW, CRF bolt
Optics: Leupold VX-3 1.75-6x32mm or 1.5-5x20mm

...which I think comes in at around $1200-$1300 total. $800 rifle, $400 scope.

Granted, I was leaned up on the rail of the pier in a terrible position.

Boss man said it's a heavy rifle, it won't kick much.

Although I did hit what I was shooting at which again will be un named

Have never handled the M70 but the FW version has piqued my interest a time or two.

A whole lot less ought 6 proponents than I had imagined when I started the thread

And to the poster that asked why I wanted to upgrade from the Savage Axis...

It's a fine gun for the money, and it's currently 4 for 4 on whitetails and groups well at the range (getting 1-1.25" groups @ 100 yds), but I really hate the stock on it as it's wayyyy too flexible, and I really don't want to just upgrade the stock. I want a stainless barrel, and I want something that's nice to look at.

Here's where I'm leaning...

Remington 700 LSS

Put down the beer and eat some damn meat man.

FWIW there are a bunch of variables above simply the caliber that dictate recoil.

.257 Ackley Improved with 100gr bullets
Kimber Montana
3.5-10 x 50mm Leupold VIII

That's a little more than $1300 but I bet you could find a Remington 700 for less money.

I'm having a hard time understanding this thread. I've read complaints that the .308 was overkill and it kicks too much. I would think of all the deer cartidges available it would kick the least outside of the .243. I just took my first deer this past weekend with a Savage Axis .308 and 150 grain Nosler Accubond and didn't feel a thing. Even my wife and son have shot it. And the .308 is very versatile as far as grains go. Plus you can get an AR-10 or LR-308 and really kick some arse.

Mine would be real similar to the M40. Maybe a 20-22 inch barrel as opposed to the normal 26". 168 or 175 grain bullet.

Anything bigger than whitetail I'd probably go for a .300 win mag.

Yeah. Probably the most inaccurate thing I've seen in here. Lord help him if he gets behind a real recoil happy gun.

Maybe he didn't read the entire post... You did say build the PERFECT deer rifle.

If money didn't matter I'd have a Schmidt and Bender too.

300 wsm
Stiller predator action
26" lilja stainless and fluted barrel 7 contour
McMillan stock
Jewell trigger

But your budget is too low to build an ultimate deer rifle.

Within your budget, I love my xbolt.

Pure whitetail out to 300 yards, I'm going with the .257 wheatherby mag or the 6.5x284 Norma. You can't go wrong with the Remington 700 cdl stainless in .257.

I will probably build a semi custom gun in 6.5x284, and toss a swaro on top of it one day.

Had an A bolt in 300 wsm. HATED sighting it in. I used it when I hunted the long fields, but I actually took a decent 8 pt with that thing at less than 30 yards and it lodged in its opposite shoulder (WIN 180 gr bal silvertip). When I opened him up it looked like a mini suicide bomber slid down his windpipe into the chest cavity. Brutal.

eta: found another pic of one I really like the looks of...

I find the recoil to be very manageable with 300 wsm. It's an xbolt medallion and shoots 1/2" w my handloads.

I have a Remington 700 action with 27" lilja #7 riding in a McMillan stck with a Shilen trigger in 270 win. I love it, but the xbolt honestly shoots with it all day.
