A savage 223 bolt action with a tasco 3x9x40 scope for my 7 year old. This will be his first year hunting and he is fired up.( almost as much as i am about it). Thoughts on this being a first gun for a 7 year old boy?

He'll be fine. Just use the right ammo.

I like a little more than a 223 for deer, but with a 7 year old you're limited. Do your research on ammo and you'll be able to put em down.

Practice, practice, practice. Make sure he can shoot well and is recommend hunting only stands where he'll be limited to 30-40 yard shots.

I do like the 223 in that you can make a sweet varmint rifle out of it once he outgrows it.

Congrats on getting your son into hunting and good luck.

The biggest buck I've ever seen in person was killed with a 22-250. Teach him to hit what he's aiming at and he'll be fine.

223 is a HORRIBLE choice for deer. WTF? So many great options out there.
