If money was not a concern, where would you move to? Or another music town (not Memphis)... I am leaning towards Nashville because of the mountains
It's time I make a move

Even leaving music aside I'd much rather live in Austin than Nashville
further South and better demographics

Denver
New Orleans

Austin (would be a lot better if the town was full of mid-20s "finding themselves")

Nashville
But
Nashville has no mountains. They are in East Tennessee. You do realize this, right?

As someone who is quite familiar with Nashville, if you're moving there for the mountains you're going to be severely disappointed...
It sounds like you need to do way more research on where you want to live. Do you know what kind of a music town they both are? Or what live music market they both are ranked? Both are music cities, but for very different reasons.

How about Asheville? Good music scene, amazing mountains/scenery, great culture - it's like the Boulder of the South.

Figure what's most important. Nashville has gotten way hipper in the last decade. Tons of night life...but Austin has SH#T tons. Nash is demoralizingly humid in the summer & the friggin capital of 33 & raining in the winter. If it weren't for the industry I'd never live here. I'd take Austin on weather, but would take a hundred places over both on geography.
If you want to work in music, Nashville. It's a big touring, recording and publishing hub with a bunch of ways in. The players at the top level are world class, but you can be employed if you work hard eitherway. There's also lots of technical work as well. If you want to be in an original rock band with lots of venues to play then Austin though you wouldn't be stranded here either.
I've also seen bands just tour Texas & have longer, more profitable runs than bands that get signed, sued and break up. Lots of hot chicks and good bbq in both, we've got two pro teams, minor league baseball and Vandy but Austin has UT.
Anyway, dunno if you're a player or what the most important angles are but hope that helps somehow. I spent a summer in Austin and have been many times since. Both towns have redeeming and notsomuch things.
