The 44 is great load at 100 and under. It has minimal recoil, hits hard, creates a big hole and should leave a good blood trail if you ever need it. The ones I've shot with the H&R 44 dropped right there.
I have no experience with the 243, but you won't go wrong with either round if he shoots straight.

I will preface this statement: "for a kid".
.44 = BIG hole and lots of room for error w/little recoil.
.243 = little hole and not much room for error w/ more recoil.
IMO and experience, .44 PERFECT kids gun out to max 125 yds.
