Trying to get my oldest his first deer this year. I have a youth model single shot rifle that has a .44 mag and a .243 barrel for it. His max shooting ability is around 100 so im not letting him shoot farther than that. Ive never shot a deer with the .44 mag even though it sighted in with Hornady rounds and looks the part.

OB experts?

Save the .243 bs

.44 mag was my son's first gun & he kilt several with it. Blows a hole for sure.

I have taken probably 10 kids who shoot their first deer, including my three and my sisters three. I grew up shooting a .243.

For me the .44 is perfect. It is less recoil than the .243, but creates more damage. It's a great gun for deer out to 100 yds

The 44 is great load at 100 and under. It has minimal recoil, hits hard, creates a big hole and should leave a good blood trail if you ever need it. The ones I've shot with the H&R 44 dropped right there.

I have no experience with the 243, but you won't go wrong with either round if he shoots straight.
