depending on the miles, you can find a 6.7 in the 30k range.

We have the exact same budget. The 7.3 is the tits, the 6.0 is good if its been fixed, the 6.4 although i dont know much is a piece from what Ive heard.

the problem with the 6.0 and 7.3's is your are stuck with an older car. its a trade off modern conveniences vs engine.

Either take your time and try to find the right deal on a 6.7 or go chevy/gmc

The 6.0 and 6.4 are junk.

The 7.3 is great, but theyre hard to find in decent shape without a million miles.

All 7.3s you are gonna find will be beat to hell. Trust me, you don't want a 6.0 or a 6.4 if you are tight on cash. To date, I have an extra $20k in my 6.4 and it still isn't running

If you aren't stuck on Ford, get a Duramax

This.

The duramax is leaps and bounds more reliable than either the 6.0 or 6.4

1. 7.3
2. 6.0 if certain reliability modifications are made
3. 6.7
4. 6.4 is a wildcard... as of now they are having longevity problems, even when not modded/chipped ...ford dealers are now stocking long blocks due to this issue.

I am on my fourth since I blew my engine a year ago. Three were used engines and this last one is a reman that I now know has cracked heads

There are things that should be done if the engine is expected to last more than 125k. If not, I'd say there is a 60% chance there will be a catastrophic failure in that 125k. That is a legitimate estimate also.

I paid 18K for a 2006 Crew Cab F350 Dually with 68K miles in March 2009, put $4200 in it, and have since added 120K miles without issue. 6.0 is fine if you get one with low miles and are willing to immediately pay to have the issues corrected (deleted).

The only problem with a Duramax is it comes in a Chevy truck. The engines are good if you can stand the constant smoke screen.

Entirely depends on what year that Duramax was made. Only one I'd think about is a very late production LLY or any year LBZ.

I would love to be able to afford a 6.7. It's just out of my budget for now. Thanks for the input. The shopping continues.

Best of luck to you.

For your budget, it's gonna be easier to find a late model Duramax. I honestly would not own a Ford diesel previous to the 6.7.

That said, any diesel w/o a ton of miles is gonna be hard to find. Clean, used trucks are difficult to find anyway and finding diesels that aren't wore slap out is really tough.

6.7L. The jury is still out on them, some positive, some negative

2008-2010:6.4L is a tee-total piece of crap, avoid it at all costs.

2003-2007: 6.0L is a good engine with all the mods, ie EGR Delete, new stud kit for the heads, new injectors. Need to put a good $5K in one. * Avoid the 'early' built 6.0L. Later 6.0L much better

1998-2003:7.3L was the last of the Mohicans. Best engine ever put out by Ford/Internatioal

only ones that have problems are the 01-04 LB7

injector design on these are pure crap!

Gm has tried numerous revisions ...the latest has a chrome ball and seat and they still fail prematurely...

I built a new race motor and installed it in 2/2013 after 40k miles I had to replace the new injectors...the injector failure had nothing to do with any high performance mods or use...

the 2006-2007 LBZ motors are the best.

re: Which Ford Diesel?

I have heard very few bad reports on the 6.7s.
There were some issues in the 450 and 550 applications, but that was emissions related. (change from the standard OTR engine)

Those old 7.3s were noisy as hell. Wouldnt fool with one today.

Find a diesel Excursion with 26,000 miles and you can retire.

re: Which Ford Diesel?

My mom drove a 4x4 7.3 excursion until about a year ago. It was almost 10 years old. Had 290k on it.

She then totaled it.

Fairly certain she walked away w/o a scratch.

Remember how crazy the market was for Jeep Wagaoneers a few years ago!

Same deal with Excursions- they are like gold.

That's the only thing that scares the crap outta me, I haven't had a any injector issues...yet? I deleted the EGR, replaced head studs, replaced oil cooler and FICM, and chipped it. Nary a problem and runs like a beast. My wife had to use it when her van was in the shop, and she was instantly jealous of how responsive and powerful that truck is.

re: Which Ford Diesel?

The injectors would be the last thing I'd worry about out of the big issues with the 6.0

Ford had a good motor. They would have faired better missing a half year of diesel truck sales and getting the kinks out of it. The 6.0 could have blown the doors off the cummins and duramax.
