re: Was Warren Sapp Really THAT Good?

Derrick Brooks was the best player on that defense. Period. But he wasn't a big mouth attention whore and he isn't employee of the NFL Network. So he won't be "remembered" the way Sapp is. And that's a shame.

Most people, at least ones who know football, know he's one of the better linebackers to play the game. He'll get his due.

But he might have been the third best player of that Buccaneer defense

IMO that's more a statement on just how good that defense was under Kiffin then it is about whether Sapp himself was good. Sapp was a very good player, but he's going to be more intriguing/entertaining to some because of his personality.

Zamoro10, I think your points are good, but I'd think I'd expect to see a significant dropoff in Brooks's productivity after 2003, and he didn't drop until 2008.

What?

Sapp is a douche, but he was the anchor to that Tampa defense. Can't play good D if you can't disrupt the middle and that's exactly what we did

No, it says a lot about your knowledge. Sapp in the middle was the key. Sorry you don't get it.

Sapp is a dick, but a great DT. I wish he were overrated.

Again, your theory suggests that Derrick Brooks would drop off when Sapp Went to Oakland. But hey, I don't understand football.

And again, I am just implying that he isn't a FIRST BALLOT guy.

You got that backwards. Sapp made that whole defense go. When one man can get constant pressure, it makes everything easier behind him. If you believe DB was better, you simply don't understand football. A qb with time doesn't make those mistakes that allowed db to get interceptions and pickup fumbles that others caused. I'm guessing the op just goes by stats.

I don't think he was that great. He played absolutely lights out for a short time, was okay for half his career, and dreadful the remainder.

Does he deserve to be in the Hall of Fame? I suppose, but first ballot? I don't think so.

Brooks had the longevity there though. Once Sapp left, he continued to keep on having solid seasons.

usually when a D-lineman the caliber of Sapp leaves a team, the whole front seven is never the same.

that wasn't necessarily true with the Bucs. Brooks was a helluva player and I think you can make an argument that he was just as important than Sapp was to Tampa Bay.

when the Bucs got Simeon Rice, that is what really brought it all together I think.

Well, for the third time, that...and a couple of first team All Pros after Sapp left.

That whole defense was nasty for years and Brooks and Barber never slowed down even after they lost Dungy and Sapp.
