If humans could truly appreciate how small we are in relation to the scale of the known universe, we'd all become suicidally depressed.

re: Most important image taken by Hubble

I hate when people throw out "incomprehensible"
Well, aren't you a little pissy pants? I think it's an accurate term. Sure, you can sort of imagine something in your head that large moving that fast, but you realistically have no frame of reference by which to truly understand something of that magnitude. If any object passed you by at that speed, you probably wouldn't even notice it. The force that is required to make something (esp. that large) move at that speed is, well...you know what it is.

Sorry if you hate any of these other words that I used.

I disagree.

Completely.

I truly believe that our perspective would change dramatically, and we'd have a sort of shift of paradigm, and that we would sort of learn to see ourselves as, like you said, infantile. That we aren't that important in the grand scheme of things, and we'd learn to come together as a species, and that we would begin to achieve a greater society because of it.

But I'm a dreamer.....

Just trying to think about it is difficult.

Perhaps Roddenberry was right. For something so much bigger than ourselves, maybe we could unite as a planet as if we were able to take to the stars.

Only if I ever find out the beings way out in the Centaurus Supercluster spends their days bored at work and surfing sfvndl%@*Dkldfmedroppings.com I'm hoping their feats are much more impressive

I'm actually pretty cool with residents of Planet Earth being very low on the Totem Pole of the Universe.

Amazing video. I have watched it about ten times, and still get that "humbling" feeling.

To give religious knuckleheads a slap of reality. Although it won't do any good.

Great, so we spent hundreds of millions of dollars for a few pictures and a 5 minute video that mean absoutely nothing to anyone.

Well, we spend trillions of dollars on endless war to protect our corporate oil interests. And trillions of dollars in corporate welfare. What's a few million in the name of science?

It's all relative.

Some people are miserable in their lives because of their jobs, kids, wife, house, car. Even though there are people with literally none of those things.

We look at things relative to our situation and I believe it's human nature.

Nah, I mean it's cool to think about but

1. Even if the telescope gives them a better idea of how big the universe is they are still just throwing our random numbers.

2. Like the video said if the information is "incomprehensible" then what use is it? How is finding this out going to change anything if we can't even understand what it means?

The Hubble is one of the best investments we've made in recent history. Do you think the War in Iraq, which cost over 3000 times more than the Hubble, was worth it?
