Thanks.

That's probably a wrap for him. An acl injury at his age is hard to come back from.

He cant cover anyone in the flat. Play action or an audible or a check down with Smith in the game was going to be a huge problem
3-4 OLB is not meant for coverage. They are ment to rush the qb, rush the qb, rush the qb, stop the run, stop the run, rush the qb, drop into zone coverage
in that order.
There's a reason 200 lb Safeties aren't playing LB in the league; they are too damn small to take on and shed blockers. Sure a SS can come up to the line, move around and find a hole to hit; but that's not the same as getting around or through Tackles, Guards and TE's.
You're completely wrong on this one

Roman harper can do all those things,
Roman Harper at OLB?!!!
And people are saying the loss of Will Smith will not hurt this defense
If nothing else, it's one less body and AT LEAST $7.5M in cap space eatten up.
Who the hell are we going to replace him with and with what money? Our middle line backers made a few plays because our DL was able to occupy the OL. Someone like Harper will get pushed 6 yards into the defensive backfield.

I'd hate to see that. You think he'd use Andrews if he wasn't trying to make a comeback?
Posted on 8/26/13 at 3:59 pm to AmosMosesAndTwins
Oh, he probably will try to comeback. I'm just saying, he'll be 32 and he hasn't been in the best shape over the past couple of years. If he wants to come back, I think he needs to drop more weight.

He actually looked pretty good getting a push from the OLB spot this pre-season. He was really disruptive in the Oakland game and looked good getting penetration before he got hurt yesterday.
People assume the 3-4 OLB is a speed rusher and coverage guy, but Ryan has always had a large OLB that could help control the line of scrimmage.
I'm not a huge fan of Smith, but he was doing that part of the job better than anyone else this preseason. I was always hoping Galette would take that job away from Smith in the regular season, but losing Smith for the season is definitely not addition by subtraction.
This is exactly how I feel about it.

we have 5 other olbs on the team i think. I just cant imagine one of our other guys cannot fill Smith's shoes. On top of that I'm not a fan of W. Smith the last couple years. He's been slow. He's been giving up on plays. He gasses out mid seasonish. I think we can put another OLBer there and be the same as they wouldve been if not better.
That's just my opinion.

Both in practice and in games so far none of the other ones have looked better all around(and I'd say only Martin has looked better rushing consistently). He's definitely the best one at stopping the run. Even if he was our worst cover OLB, they aren't asked to cover that much and he could always sub out.
I have hope with Wilson and Galette coming back but the other guys are at least a slight step down.

this remains to be seen

The problem is we have seen it. Hopefully they can improve but none of the 4 remaining healthy ones have outplayed him. It hasn't even really been close.
I have hope Galette and Wilson can, but the other guys to this point are not the answer. And I'm not saying they are terrible but they aren't as good as Smith so take that how you want.

I'll take that as the difference between them is negligible at best and the loss of a fat, slow, often un-motivated looking Will Smith isnt the make or break point of this defense.

I'm not going that far with it either(as I said, we still have Galette and Wilson who I hope are both better). But it will be more impactful than just an "Oh well".

Untrue, according to PFF.
Through three Preseason games, PFF has rated 111 3-4 OLB's.
For overall scores, Rufus is 35th, Martin is 62nd, Smith was 79th, and Atkinson and Richardson are in the upper 90's.
Also, both Rufus and Martin are ahead in pass rushing.

According to PFF, Rufus is our best run-stopping OLB, followed by Atkins and then Smith.

Even if he was our worst cover OLB
Technically, Atkins is, but Smith isn't far behind.

The PFF information (at least, as of now) does not support this.

As an addendum, the top rated 3-4 OLB right now is none other than SF's Parys Haralson.
We could REALLY use this guy.

+1. I'm really shocked at the outcry on this board considering all the bashing that's been done on his behalf. He was serviceable depth at his very best, and most likely not even that. I think Richardson could fill in his spot easily.
I think people are confusing bashing his CURRENT skills as opposing to bashing his contributions to this organization. Dude has been a class act and I'm thankful, but its not a detriment to the person to realize when he's past helping this team.

This is skewed a bit because 1) they've played far fewer snaps and 2) that came against 3rd string Olinemen and RBs whereas Smith was playing against the ones.
Plus, while I like their rankings, they don't have a perfect system.
I will admit I'm surprised Johnson is that high though. I'll have to look at his snap counts and how many were runs.

interdasting. but what do we trade for him?

Not saying he's bad, but in preseason stats get skewed because some good backups play against other terrible backups. If it isn't ones vs. ones I don't put too much stock in it.
How many preseason "stars" have we had in the past?
