I like both shows a lot and when I say that it's seems very obviously The Sopranos, I don't want to it to appear as a knock on Breaking Bad because it is also one of the best shows I've ever seen.

easily make a case for Mad Men

Not for a show like The Sopranos
season 6 of the sopranos was much different than the first 5 seasons, as it was full of subliminal messaging. so in that regards, the ending was par for the course for season 6.

I just finished rewatching all 6 seasons of the Sopranos. For all their greatness, the really suffer have some of the same criticisms and same plot points:
1. Both Main Characters have associates they treat as sons, while neglecting their actual sons.
2. They attempt to build some drama/story around the sons but fail and repeat themselves. Junior eats breakfast and whines about being neglected/kept in dark. A.J battles depression and can't find an identity. It's same rinse repeat arcs for them.
3. Both fathers try to substitute being fathers with materialistic nonsense.
4. Both Mothers are over involved and materialistic. If they are occupied with a "career" they cause less problems. Also, care more about others opinions and superficially place value on family.
5. Tony and Walt manage to commit crime under the same guise of family.
6. One is a formal O.C. The other is a loose drug gang with structure.
7. Both main characters are battling an illness. Walt Cancer. Tony Mental Health.
8. Each main character is extremely smart but underestimated by their opponents.
9. Every character around them actually hates them or eventually resents them.
10. At their core, both characters are pure antithesis of evil.
It's pretty much an identical show in some aspects and at minimum have parallels.

* Soprano Spoilers*
My only actual hard criticism with the Sopranos is with how they handled Bobby Baccala (sp). He was a real tender hearted guy who was forced into doing some things he wasn't comfortable with. He was past 40 and never killed anyone until Tony made him as revenge for beating him up.
I also didnt like that Baccala died but a ruthless murderer like Paulie survived the series. That upset me. Baccala had a child's heart as depicted by his obsession with Trains that was resented by Tony.
Still, Bobby Baccala was one of the few good guys in either series. I get upset everytime I watch Blue Comet.

Yes, the ending sucked. You thought so too. Everybody did.
Wrong.
BB and The Sopranos is apples and oranges. They are both great shows. It doesn't have to be a pissing contest. I will say right now though, watching these first 3 eps of the season for BB, it is just at the top of it's game.
I'm gonna give The Sopranos a rewatch again soon enough. Then I will watch Deadwood again. That show was fantastic. Boardwalk is becoming my favorite show and I can't wait. Mad Men was a great season as well.
We're lucky to see so much great television. Quit whining about what is best and enjoy it

It was a straightforward show that jumped the track with an artsy-fartsy finale. That's what caused the backlash from the fans. Not their inability to think or to follow along.

Nobody is whining about anything.
It is a discussion about the topic which is clearly laid out in the subject line and OP.
Not sure why you would come in here just to tell us that everything is great, and to have an opinion and voice it= whining.

So, you all had to convince each other that it was good.
No. Not at all. I just said it was surprising and a touch disappointing for a couple minutes (primarily because of the fact that "poof" the series had ended). But we thought it worked well once it sunk in and it became clear how it followed what had gone before.

The fact that it's controversial and pisses people off makes it even more interesting to me.
That's a seriously weak reason to like anything.
Bzzzzzz. Wrong again. Good writing, both in film and literature, often produces controversial, unsettling endings that either don't satisfy everyone or that confuses people (slow down, hoss, I'm not suggesting you were confused).

Everything you have said is basically excellent proof that the ending sucked.
Damn it I knew I was being sadbagged by someone a real television and film critic. Who do you write for? 'Fess up.

Christ. I'd like just one discussion of this without someone trotting out that tired cliche. Have an original thought instead of regurgitating that meme.
Fair enough.

What makes it more painful to hear is that the series WAS neatly sorted out all the way up until the final scene. Just about every storyline was tidied up leading up to the last meal.
Hmmm, if you really think about it, there were some threads left unresolved. But even if not, so what?
SPOILERS!!!
We all know Tony had to die or end up in prison. Do you think the show would somehow have been better if, in the last scene, they would have actually shown Tony being shot at the table? Really? Why? In what way?
Or did you not like the final scene of the family gathering together for dinner. That was perfect. And the scene was really well directed all the way down to Meadow having trouble with the parking space. It built tension.
I'd be interested to know what changes in the ending some of you would make. Exactly how would you like to have seen it end.

Because something pisses people off is a horrible reason to think it's good.
You're basically admitting to being a troll.
The family could have broken out in a "Grease" like song and dance. It would have been controversial and pissed people off, and been horrible..... But only marginally worse than what we got.

I'm not the one basically saying "hey, it pissed people off. I like that. DC trolled the frick out of us. That's just fantastic."
The ending didn't fit in with the rest of the series.
You haven't offered any justification that it did.

I'm sorry, you've shifted the burden of proof to me to establish the ending "fits in" with the rest of the series? What does that really mean to you? Do you mean because we saw Sylvio in coma (uh oh, loose end . . . did he survive) that we must see Tony actually get shot? What?

The ending brought the entire series full circle. Everything we learned throughout watching was summed up in the finale.
Maybe if you paid closer attention to the ending as you do hooker shopping you would have understood it.

Th black screen bullshite did not fit it with how the series was presented.

Here's the cliched nonsense again. "You just didn't get it". Spare me.

I wouldn't care if Tony was killed, went to prison, or just realized that with everything sorted out with his family and his business, he was still unhappy, under pressure, and in danger of being whacked at any moment.
It wasn't that he lived or died (depending on your point of view) at the end. It's that it was presented in a poor fashion that was out of sync with the rest of the series.
It's up to the writers, but I'd lean towards showing that Tony lived but was still having to watch over his shoulder and that nothing had changed (even though he was where he wanted to be).
Second choice would be a death scene.
I don't think that an arrest would've made for much drama as a finish to the series.

Why this is so hard to comprehend for some is beyond me.
They all saw it. They all went "WTF? That's it?"
I guess just saying it was awesome, and trying to fell intellectually superior trumps honesty.
