Hopefully this doesn't turn out to be true.

The Philadelphia Inquirer doesn't project undrafted Eagles WR Russell Shepard to earn a roster spot.

....keep in mind this is a newspapers projection. It doesn't mean anything, but obviously is not good news necessarily.

Interesting, but not surprising... Best of luck to him.

It goes to show how razor thin the margin of error is in the NFL. All reports had him performing well in practice, then the first preseason game he got the most targets out of any receiver on the team. He didn't necessarily drop those passes, but he didn't make the catch on some poor throws. NFL receivers "make plays", and Shepard didn't. In preseason game 2, I don't think he got any targets.

What did Eminem say? If you only get one shot? What will you do with it?

he was always fighting an uphill battle. I posted this in the earlier thread, but people just don't like facts:
quote:

quote:

i totally agree, but if he keeps raising eyebrows, no reason to think he can't be a #5.
they already have 5 guys back from last year:

Jason Avant
Riley Cooper
Damaris Johnson
Greg Salas
DeSean Jackson

If they keep 6 on their roster (which is what the Saints generally do as a pass happy team), then these guys are all fighting for the last spot:

Arrelious Benn (5th year)
Dave Ball (3rd year)
BJ Cunningham (2nd year)
Ifeanyi Momah (2nd year)
Russell Shepard (1st year)
Will Murphy (1st year)

RS could very well make the team. But, he's fighting an extreme uphill battle just based on the numbers.

ETA: It isn't really anything about what RS has or hasn't done. It is purely a numbers game. They already have guys with more experience. RS had a ton of guys he would have had to beat out to make the roster.

Also, there's no reason to think that he can't hang around as a practice squad guy and still make a good living in the NFL.

I said this yesterday. He's not good enough to play in the NFL and his comments about taking himself off the draft board make me think hes not smart enough either.

From the newspaper article the blurb was based on:

quote:

There are probably a couple of practice squad spots reserved for wideouts. If Maehl doesn’t occupy one, Russell Shepard and Ifeanyi Momah would be the most likely candidates off the current roster to fill the spots. Shepard had a nice start to camp, but has tailed off. He’s done all the right things – attached himself to a veteran like Avant, stayed after practice to work on his catching – but he faces an uphill climb to the 53. He isn’t averse to playing on special teams which could help his cause. Read more at LINK
Doesn't sound like he's not good enough to play in the NFL. Also, the writer says that his choice for the 6th receiver was "a total guess".

So much for all the Russell Shepard packages that he claimed to have been promised when he signed.
