True, for a year. Then miserably outclassed the rest of the war.

Some fighter porn for the board. If you want a larger version, change the "4" at the end of the link to a 5 or 6.

Bingo. The Zero was a damn good fighter (albeit with some very serious flaws). They went for pure speed and maneuverability with it and in doing so they sacrificed it's survivability. It lacked armor and even worse, self sealing fuel tanks. And while it was suicide for the early war American fighters (P-40's, Buffalo, and Wildcats) to try and dogfight it, even they (with the exception of the Buffalo) saw success against the Zero by adapting their tactics to avoid turning one on one dogfights with the Zero (Google search Thach Weave for a good example of this).

As for the two fighters I cited, the Hellcat & Corsair, these two fighters could go toe to toe with the Zero, especially the Corsair, and expect to be painting another Rising Sun on the fuselage of their aircraft that evening.

The real question is which is the best tactical fighter that you've ever ridden in?

My answer is the mudhen, got a ride a while back- here's the video of an unrestricted climb surface to 15k. F-15E

Air to ground: B-2 Spirit

Seriously?! Based on what, their "stealth"?

Obviously, the answer depends on the scenario not just "air to ground". Is it close air support, interdiction, strategic attack, etc? Each of these doctrinal mission types have a different answer.

CAS: A-10
Interdiction: B-1
Strategic Attack: B-2 (penetrating bomb dropper) and B-52 (standoff missiles)
SEAD: F-16CM

The F-15E is good at all of the above, but not quite the winner in any of them.

Nope. F-22 would kick its ass.

Not really. It's good, but has a lot of limitations. Also, they really only work with Special Forces so their availability is limited.

I would like to hear its limitations and how it only works with "Special Forces." Please educate me.

Guns really aren't all that accurate. It is very slow so if it isn't already on-scene, it takes a long time to get there and a firefight could already be over. Not very good against moving targets (i.e. vehicles and armor). Like I said, it's not that it is bad. Just not the best in my opinion.

This is absolutely true; especially for the last few years in Afghanistan. This is mostly due to its slow speed that I mentioned earlier. The SOF guys are usually out instigating a fight, so they park an AC-130 overhead. It is also good in this instance because it can loiter for a long time. These two factors make it a smart idea to have the AC-130s matched up with the SOF guys.

That's because everyone here is a fighter pilot and makes $150,000.

Either that or their niece works in the navy, which by default makes them an expert...

Thanks for posting your perceived limitations. I think the A-10 is awesome as well, I just think your impressions of the AC-130 are a little off. Some of those limitations could be applied to the A-10 as well, you're not calling on an AC-130 or an A-10 to get anywhere in a hurry.

I work a few cubes down from some AC-130 guys and have seen some of their home movies that would suggest gun accuracy and moving targets aren't really a problem.

I haven't been to Afghanistan since 05, so you could be right on the SOF stuff. I'd walk down to ask but I'm on leave today.

Like I said, it's really just splitting hairs. Both are good at what they do, I just think the A-10 is better.

I've seen the gun footage from AC-130 strikes as well. I'm sure you'll find plenty of footage of them shacking the target, but I could also find footage of them missing; especially on their first few shots until they get it zeroed in.

I was in Afghanistan from July 2010 to January 2011 and AC-130s were exclusively used by SOF.

BTW, where do you work?

Hey Five0, I worked downtown in Da Ham and we watched them from the building. I also would occasionally drive to the airport, park on the back road there, and watch them from there. Good ole days.

I don't know when you were parked out there, but if it was in the mid 80's we probably drove past one another. My old man took me out there all the time.
