Did you try different lump??
I use the cardboard cube things too. I dig a little "pit" in the middle of the lump and light the cube and drop it in then cover it up with lump without putting the fire out. leave vent and dome wide open for 7-10 min then close dome leaving vents open. adjust when you start getting 50-75 degrees from where you want

Also, any chance your lump is damp?
Many things possible here - most likely bad charcoal or poor airflow.

Me either, it's a solider. But the trade off is you can't brag about buying a cheap grill on your Facebook status.

Got to agree with the problem being the lump charcoal.
I see where people take pictures of what's on the grill(no matter what kind it is)and the bag of charcoal(lump pr briquettes)rolled up and stuck under the grill. That's not the way to store your fuel. If not doing so already store your fuel in a plastic container. Sam's sell' big dog food storage containers that hold about a 40 lb bag of charcoal for like twenty bucks.
Try a new bag of lump!

So I figured out what was happening.
I had always been using Royal Oak before and never had a problem, could poor it in and hand pick out the rest when I am near the bottom to avoid the dust.
When I switched over to the Publix version I started having my problem. I totally vacuumed and disassembled the firebox etc so it was totally clean. Worked pretty good for a couple cooks then started smoking again.
Moved to a different lump and still had problems.
I finally decided to unload all the used charcoal again to find that the lump (both versions) had very small pieces of lump that were all around the bottom of the firebox choking off airflow. I cleared that out and hand picked out only good sized lump and it lit up like it should.
Low and behold, it was my inexperience with not knowing that not all bags of lump are like the Royal Oak and have good sized lump. I will no longer assume I can just pour in a bag. A very frustrating experience but I am glad to have solved this mystery and learned a lesson.

I had always pulled the big chunks and set them aside. Never thought about there being tons of small pieces choking the airflow.

not every bag of royal oak is good either. i've gotten some that were full of crushed pieces. if the bag gets crushed on the pallet your gonna have that..

I must have had some really good luck all year because I never really knew that this could be a problem. Bought four bags of Royal Oak yesterday and had a great cook last night. While it is easier to go with other brands, RO is by far the best I have used.

Get a chimney starter I have had better luck with cowboy charcoal than I did with royal oak

So chimney starters are a good choice? Last night I had no issues at all. I love my egg when it is healthy.
