Grantland Fixes the NHL

Down Goes Brown was one of the best hockey blogs out there, and he's been writing for Grantland about hockey for a few months now. Today, he had proposals to "fix" the NHL

It's like my own personal hobby horse. Give it a read. Puckheads, what do y'all think?

NHL offense spiked after the 2005 lockout thanks to new rules implemented after the work stoppage, but it has been making its way back to Dead Puck Era levels ever since. Not everyone thinks this is bad, and it's certainly true that there is such a thing as an exhilarating 1-0 game. There's also such a thing as a stiflingly dull 1-0 (or 2-0 or 2-1) game, and fans have had to sit through far too many of those in recent years.
We can argue over what sort of goals-per-game rate we should aim for. If the early 2000s were too low, maybe the run-and-gun 1980s were too high. Personally, I thought the early '90s were a good compromise. That would mean we need to find a way to add about a goal and a half per game (up to roughly 7.0 from the current 5.5).

Its fine.
No other major pro sport artificially tampers with their product as much as the NHL has over the years to try and reach some desired end.
The only thing I would even come close to support at this stage is to add a little more to the size of the rink.

Now that is a good idea. They don't have hockey in Canada yet.

Really good article. I agree with nearly every single one of his points and all of them in part 1. Go to hybrid icing and make delay of game like icing. Completely agree with both of those. The shootout sucks, but unfortunately there's no going back. But making OT longer would help, and making every game worth three points would certainly help, as well.
I also agree with making the goal about an inch wider (most, but not all of the current post shots would become goals, which would probably increase scoring from the current 5.5 goals per game to 6.5. That's the number I'd like to shoot for, a little lower than the 7 per game he wants). The playoff lottery/draft pick position solution is absolutely genius. You still give the worst teams an advantage, but it avoids complete tanking and makes games more interesting for fans of terrible teams. I love it and want it implemented yesterday. I'm not completely in love with his suspension for more than 10 fights rule. Don't hate it, but would probably prefer the status quo.
Like the enforcer, I'm indifferent to the possible intra-conference SC Final (BTW, he mentions "I'm willing to risk the occasional Columbus-Dallas matchup if it means we might someday see Toronto vs. Montreal". Might want to check realignment, dude. And yeah, I'm mad he called out the Cbus market, haha). And agree completely that there should only be one outdoor game a year.
Pretty good article overall. Agree with the vast majority of his proposals.

I think the team in Nashville does alright, but they don't have any pro sports to compete with when the NFL season ends. I do agree that the Coyotes should probably be moved to Seattle or Quebec City.

Not trying to be a jerk but how many people know that Miami has a hockey team? Would it not be more appropriate in areas that traditionally support the sport. I admit I am not particularly knowledgable regarding the sport

Hybrid icing and fixing the out of play rule need to be fixed immediately.
I would support either 1. Making the goals a bit larger, or 2. Reducing the goalie pad size, mainly the leg pads.
But really, I think goal wise, the game is fine as is.

I pretty much agree with everything except for the reseed idea. I think that's terrible. Why have conferences then? (And if you get rid of conferences and go Premier League style, sure, looks good to me now).
I particularly like bigger nets and draft position changes. Those are nice additions. Although, getting back to 90's scoring, bigger nets might be a bit of an overshot.

I'm not a huge NHL fan (mostly due to NOLA not having a team), but I do enjoy catching a few games here and there- But I've always thought that NHL could benefit from pushing the season back at least a month or so. If it was going on right now after basketball/ before football, I would definitely be more interested.

Florida actually really supports their NHL team.
They were 22nd in the NHL in attendance with the worst team in the league, better attendance than Columbus, NYI, Edmonton, Colorado, etc.
Florida averages 1,190 less fans per game than the Miami Marlins with a team equally as bad. That is 99.7% capacity for the Panthers arena.

I think restricting pad sizes a bit should increase scoring.
They are talking about the restrictions adding an additional 4" to the five hole which is pretty huge as a goalie.
I think the sport is fine, just need some teams in colder climates. Bring on a Portland/Seattle Expansion

but it hasn't. They've restricted pads before to no effect. I think a wider net (nothing drastic, maybe a total of 3 inches) is a good idea because little kids play with full size nets and you get bigger and bigger and there's less and less to shoot at it as you get older. It just restores the game to what it was like when you were younger (like 14, not 8).
Really, it comes down to just calling the rulebook. Did you know the delay of game call is not automatic? It's supposed to be for "deliberate" plays over the glass, but that never ever gets called. Call freakin' interference. We're not quite Dead Puck Era, but we're getting close. Let skill players be skill players and have some ice to work with.
Besides, open ice hits are cooler than clutching and grabbing. Scoring is at a near historic low, and no one though the 60s Habs sucked. We don't need the 80s Oilers, but if you had to choose between 1970s era thug hockey or 80s open ice, I choose the 80s every time. Err on that side, though I agree the scoring levels of the 60s and 90s are the platonic ideal.

How many shots per game hit the post and ring out?
Usually at least a few it seems, sometimes quite a few.
3 inches would definitely change that and up the scoring.

I know this isn't that insightful, but I'll state the obvious....if hockey really wants to do better and please fans, stop having work stoppages every 5 years. Hockey fans like myself will watch whether goals are 1.0 per game or 7.0 per game, but we can't watch if they don't play

They should have league with only Canadian city teams and a league with only American city Teams. Stanley cup is always Canada vs US

Phoenix and Dallas should move, but the other southern teams should stay. I think Miami just needs new management. Both Tampa Bay and Nashville do well.

Do you know how many teams would have to move to make that anywhere close to viable?
I think the scoring in the NHL is just fine. An average of 5.5 goals is an average a little more than a 3-2 game and that's plenty, IMO. The goalie is at a big enough disadvantage and would make their job even harder. I'm all for the hybrid icing and some of the other safety improvements though.

Coyotes can go to Quebec City, Stars can go to Seattle.
