That's if you want to get the redemption "up front."

Otherwise, you can just purchase your ticket, and then you have 90 days to have the points applied (called "Purchase Eraser"), which is kind of a neat feature since you could purchase something you don't have enough points for, then have 3 months to earn enough to cover.
