I was watching Trip Gone Bad on Outdoor Channel. This Yankee who had never hunted in the Everglades before walks into the glades alone, gets lost, makes a fire, signals for help then walks away from his fire eventually losing his gear. My question is after you signal for help and your signal was answered, would you walk away from your fire?

F$%k no!! You stay put unless something extreme makes you move. Even then, stay as close to your original position.

This is what I thought, especially as they answered his signal.
Dont know if I could have eaten that raw eel though.

Instinct is to "find" your way out. However, what usually happens is you panic and get more lost and then eventually take off running like a madman and get injured. I have been lost at night and despite the urge to get out. Used my brain, built a fire and played survivalist overnight. I looked at it at first as a bad thing, then said f$%k it I'm here, might as well enjoyed myself. Cooked some of the squirrels I had n had a big time. Once light and I got my bearings, I found my way out with ease.
Mistakes-no compass on me. Especially in an area I was not real familiar with. Not letting people know exactly were I was going and when I'd be back. I was 16, so no cell phone. No one had them then except an elite few. Was not prepared for a cold night. Luckily, I was sneaking smokes when I hunted and had a lighter and a pack of Marlboro reds to keep me company.

I was also lucky that I had been lost before and did everything wrong, but found my way out by shear luck. I was about 12 and got turned aroung squirrel hunting in the Moro bottoms. First time to hunt but was there with dad and grandpa. Was embarrassed to yell for help. More I tried to get unlost the more I got lost. Finally, I did yell for help but no answer. Got treed by a f$%king boar. When I finally got down, it was getting dark and panic set in and I took off running like a wild man. Came out at truck right on time. Played it off like a boss.

Why the frick would you ever leave your signal? The whole point of a signal is to draw people to said signal. Leaving it kind of defeats the point doesn't it?
