Fair weather implies that I only watch it / root for the U.S. when they're winning but jump ship when they're not which is not the case.

And as mentioned before being from SC, there are no MLS teams around, and because I don't like being fair weather I have no intention of just picking one of the well known club powers and start pretending like I'm a fan of them.

eta: I'll be in The Hague on the 12th and I see their club is playing on the 13th so maybe I'll catch that one.

Yes and No ... TFTC I do understand where you are coming from though because I am in the same boat.

I infinitely know more about the ongoings of LFC and check daily for info about them. I am way more concern with the ins and outs of LFC than I am the USMNT.

With that being said USMNT win means more to me than LFC. Example:

USMNT winning WC >>>>>>>> LFC wining FA Cup, BPL & Champions league combined

Yeah, I think for someone who didn't live in Europe or have foreign-born parents, you're left picking one of the 8 or 9 most successful teams in the world, and when they are so far away and you have no real ties, it's hard to pick a club team.

I grew up watching the national team so there's no comparison for me. It's how I was introduced to the sport overall. I just find it difficult to get that attached to any pro team (soccer or otherwise) that I didn't grow up rooting for. I don't have any real ties to Fulham, I didn't grow up watching them, I don't go to the games, etc. I would continue following them even if they were relegated, but it's not like Alabama football/basketball, the national team, etc.

Yeah, exactly. It's one of your secondary teams.

I'm the same way. I support the colleges I attended, the countries I am a citizen of, LSU since I grew up in Baton Rouge for my entire childhood, the Saints, and Fenerbahce.

Even the Pelicans are a casual team for me since they came to the state when I was 17, and I left the next summer. If I picked another European side, they would be at best like the Pelicans (although a much more competitive side).

You know what I meant ... I was saying the more you watch the more you will become a FAN OF THE SPORT and just not someone that watches it once every four years. (fair weather fan)

I understand your sentiment on not being able to attach yourself to a club but I can assure you if you watch the matches you will find yourself gravitating to one club or another. There are a lot out their with many different styles. You have the EPL, La Liga, Bundesliga, Seria A, Ligue 1 to start off with.

Given you aren't from there with no connections this becomes a blessing you can be a fan of many teams. I was like this until I noticed that I cared for Liverpool more than any of the other clubs. I was then fortunate enough to make a Liverpool vs Everton Match @ Anfield and that seeled the deal for me and I have been married to LFC ever since.

I do hope you end up watching more and find a club you can call home you will be happier for it(maybe sadder too depending on who you choose)

This works the same for MLS though for my case I have a lot of friends from Houston so that was my natural choice.

I prob invest a couple of hours a day to following LFC and am wholly invested in them week in and week out during a 9 month season...

I tune into the USMNT when they play and rarely know the starting 11 until right before the start. Do I root for them hard during the match, hell yes!

I don't know what id rather, because I know what a WC would mean to the sport in this country. That said, all my thoughts usually go to what LFC needs to bring trophies to Anfield.

Hate to bump my own thread but about to buy a ticket to the friendly between ADO Den Haag and Swansea City on July 13.

Awesome! Swans are easily the most likable teams you'll watch.

I don't think I can arbitrarily get into a Euro. club.

If you're of European ancestry pick a team near your ancestor's home. I love the city of Munich and drank a lot with some FC Bayern supporters at Oktoberfest. Been into FC Bayern since. Doesn't hurt that they're a historical power as well.

And here I was planning on rooting for the local team to see if I couldn't get into it. Briefly looking them up they don't have a whole lot of championships behind them but seem to do decent enough in the Dutch league. However I noticed Amsterdam seems to be the hegemon of the Dutch league.
