You aren't understanding. The Louisiana kids that qualify for tops means a fewer percentage of the 11.7 scholarships has to be applied to them, therefore freeing up a greater percentage to pursue out of state players. A kid from Biloxi can take an 80% ride to ole miss or lsu, but he's going to eat into ole miss allotment number more so than lsu because ole miss doesn't have half of their roster utilizing academic scholarship money. It isn't that hard to understand, and there is NO disputing that it's an advantage

You can most definitely receive tops and athletic scholarship for the Olympic sports including baseball. It may just be TOPS + books only or board or a monthly stipend... Any combo.

The point being they can throw a small percentage of athletic scholarship plus Tops to entice in-state players to stay.

In the end it is usually much more of a scholarship/savings for family then going out of state and receiving a partial athletic scholarship but also having to pay out of state tuition

Close friends of the family plays LSU softball and said to make sure my daughters grades were right if she wants to get recruited due to being eligible for TOPS and such. She was student of the year in middle school so thats not a problem. So I take that for what it's worth. Guess it does have a small advantage.

I have been hearing shite here in Mississippi this week that the presence of TOPS gives LSU an advantage over many other schools in recruiting baseball players...basically, we can save our scholarships to use on really gifted players who can't qualify for TOPS while those who do qualify can play for the team without us burning a "real" baseball scholarship...

As I understood it, to prevent any "Alabama" loopholes in schoolly rules, a scholarship player is a scholarship player.

The source of the funds do not matter.

For football you're right. Baseball and Olympic sports, you can have TOPS only and it will not count against the scholarship limit

re: Does TOPS Give LSU an advantage in recruiting?

There is a lot of misinformation in this thread.

While tops is a great program, the value is extremely overstated. Tops covers full tuition per semester/yr but no fees (average $5200 yr) and is available to all LA students who qualify.
Athletic scholarships(yes, there are multiple but all categorically the same) are 90 % of the student's aid and are a substantial amount.

Any other interpretation or information is bs.

As to the recruiting advantage, it's not much, considering the costs associated with attending (tuition/fees, housing, meal, books, etc). Also, many other states have similar programs for their residents.

But baseball don't give full scholarships.

Don't most states have their own version of Tops? I know Georgia does.

how many of these players would actually be eligible for tops?

its not a handout you still have to earn it even though many think its to easy to get.

id say yes. for baseball it helps cus they inly get partial scholarships. it would also help an instate kid that wants to walk on or take a grey shirt, but those are the kids that want to be at lsu either way. so i dont see it as a clear cut advantage for football. the oos kids cant get tops.

Georgia has hope scholarship and UGA never locks down its own state.

For kickers and maybe walk on full backs in the past. Like others have said the other sports really benifate from it.

re: Does TOPS Give LSU an advantage in recruiting?

My son is a high school baseball player in Louisiana that will qualify for tops. If he gets a 25% offer to MSU or Ole Miss, or a Roster Spot offer to LSU and can use his TOPS, what financial decision do you think we will make? Of course this is a big advantage for Louisiana Schools .

This is why you see so many "walk ons" on our team that are starters/contributors. Its a little like Nebraska football back in the 80s. All their lineman were "former WalkONs" they would get a community scholarship and go as a walk-on, work out like hell and get buffed, and then get an athletic scholarship down the road.

Tell them they sound like Ron Polk whining while at MSU before coaching at UGA. Polk said the same thing, then went to UGA which has the same type of scholly program and did nothing special with their teams.

He was at UGA for 2 seasons, won the SEC and went to the CWS in his 2nd.
