Was fishing 32 miles offshore out of Grand Isle over an old rig and caught what appeared to be an African Pompano. This was determined after an exhaustive internet search. Is this fish rare for these waters? My friend and I have fished the gulf many years and never have caught anything like it.

Did it then immediately swim into a turbine that killed it?

Rare yeah but not unheard of. A guy speared the state record last weekend. 36# wish I took a pic

They are pretty rare in the Mexican ocean, with that being said, folks still do catch them out there. A lot of divers seem to spear them though.

Lots of them in the keys, so not that far away.

I've caught one fishing for AJ's before. Same as you, didn't know exactly what it was at the time. Figured it out when we took a look at the "Fish of the GoM" poster at the camp.
