Maybe a little

I just think it's a silly question. There's a small subset of trashy walmart cruises and he's asking specifically about those. But he didn't specify that.

Just saying, I have a cruise coming up in 2 weeks. South of France, Malta, Florence, Venice, etc. We will have NONE of your problems. We will have all you can drink beer and wine, the missus will have private spa and massage sessions, I will gamble, and we will see some great art and sights while bouncing around the Mediterranean. There won't be any fat trashy buffett eating rednecks.

Most cruises are not Carnival Tampa/Mobile/NOLA redneck yacht clubs

someone's Daddy taking him on a cruise this summer?

There are good cruise lines out there, you just have to be willing to find them.

Celebrity, Princess, and Holland America are pretty good lines. The irony is that I believe all 3 are owned by Carnival.

A step down would be Royal Carribean and Norwegian.

Stay away from Carnival unless it's something like a Mediterranean. Those usually don't attract as much trash as a cruise out of New Orleans or Galveston.

Cruises can be ok, but they are not for everybody.

LINK

this is the one they went on, they rented the whole thing.

So they rented the whole boat for $40k? How long was the cruise? What was included and how many people? If you have 6 or 7 couples that doesnt really sound that bad

ETA: I see the boats can accommodate up to 20-24 passengers depending on which boat. $40k for the entire boat is a steal IMO

i'm just trying to find out why other people like them.

My parents never went on a cruise until 2-3 years ago. Never thought they would enjoy a cruise. Now they go on them twice a year...but they aren't carnival type. All inclusive and small boats. The one they are on now has 20 something different stops so they get to see a lot of different places and not be stuck on the ship.

sit on the beach instead

See I hate this.. So does my wife. I had a Condo in Tampa on the beach last week and we went to the beach 1 day. I just find it boring. Spent the rest of the time going around Tampa or to a park. Some people will like just going to a beach some people like to move around more I guess.

NCL,RCCL and Carnival are def all on the same level. NCL is actually cheaper in most cases than Carnival. Where Carnival gets its bad rap is on the party cruises that are not as heavily offered on RCCL and NCL. NOLA is a very very bad port to tak a Carnival short cruise out of. Galveston is a good port for a 7 day cruise only on it. Just avoid 3 and 4 day Carnival cruises.

It's not just sitting on the beach, I just don't like being herded around when you get to a destination or having to be places at a certain time. I'm more of a plan as you go person.

re: What are the positives of going on a Cruise?

Norwegian Cruise Lines has cruises in Hawaii that take you to all the main islands. You cruise at night and are in port all day long, two days in the case of Maui. We got to see much more of Hawaii than we would have if we had tried to island hop on our own. It was also easy to add a couple of extra days at the beginning to explore Oahu on our own. Your parents might enjoy that some time if they haven't already been.

So don't book an excursion, and do stuff at your own leisure

I think rape might be legal once you are out at sea.

I don't mind having an itinerary...as long as I'm the one getting to make it. I like a mix of planned activities but also free time to explore the area and get a chance to experience the food, culture, etc of a place.
