Riots After Teams Win Championship

So I am watching some show on TruTV, and they were talking about how the city of Denver rioted twice when the Broncos won back to back superbowls when Elway was around.
Maybe someone here can explain to me why people riot when their teams have success. I've always associated riots with rebellion and wrong doings. Not celebrations. It is mind boggling to me.

I honestly think it has to do with the lack of true fulfillment we get when our teams reach ultimate success.
We think about the moment our team wins the championship over and over again. When it finally happens, expectations are not quite met.
People riot to add more excitement to this event.

it's a northern thing, but the best riot was after Vancouver lost

Mob mentality + drunkenness + adrenaline rush I suppose.
When AU won the NC, I drunkenly ran outside to celebrate in the streets. However, I live in a quiet, middle class neighborhood and I found myself alone, so no rioting occurred.

It's mostly reserved for gay sports like soccer, hockey, and bball in the Northeastern and Midwestern regions. At least that's what I've learned from this board.

This is to be expected (sadly). Your team loses, and you get those few out of control drunk idiots who start, and then the other drunks join in. Soon enough you have an entire city doing it becuase there is no way the cops can control everyone in a violent rage like this without some serious crowd control measures like tear gas, etc.

I always imagined how bad the city would look in the event the Saints ever won the Super Bowl, just one. What type of havoc would happen? That day came....... and it was nothing...
Los Angeles Lakers win 16 World titles, and riots for every one of them.

May explain why there was no riot when the Saints won the Superbowl.
It really was that fricking awesome. Maybe even moreso than I could have possibly expected.

CU Boulder has a healthy list of student riots in the late 90s and early 00s. Most of them were not even sports related.

I think possibly the city of New Orleans was still in a state of disbelief that it had happened, especially so soon after Katrina. Even though I am a Falcons fan, I thought it was pretty damn awesome that the city was able to hang their hat on a superbowl victory after suffering through such a enormous tragedy.
