COACH MAINERI: We were going to bunt the two times. All year I would have had Raph hit in that situation, and he's had a propensity to hit into double plays, I think as people who follow our program know. And I was going to go ahead and bunt. I just figured in that situation he hadn't been really swinging the bat that great the whole game. We gave him the bunt sign for two pitches. And then once the count got 2-0, I knew Mason was a very heady base runner and he wouldn't get picked off, and I figured Berg, who throws a lot of strikes, was going to have to lay one in there, assuming he was going to bunt again. And so we decided to take a gamble there and go with the hit and run, and Raph hit it hard. It was just really bad luck. He hit it so hard, they were able to get the force out at second before Mason could get there and turned the double play. So I gambled and we came up snake eyes. I was hoping that we could end up with a big inning out of it. That ball, I think he hit it pretty close to the line. They must have been playing on the line. If the ball goes down the line for a double, we're in business, maybe have a chance to win the game right there against a tough reliever. The other thought I had was once the count got 2-0, we were going into the bottom half of our order, and I just thought that it was worth the risk, worth the gamble and see if we could make something happen, get a runner to third base with less than two outs. Didn't work out for us.

I thought it was a hit and run. Still raph needs to hit it to the right side

I agree completely. You take the bunt off with a 2-0 count.

Mainieri knows Rhymes hits into double plays.. he even said Rhymes does. He put on the hit and run to get Katz to 2nd if Rhymes grounds out.

Rhymes chopped it too hard to the 3rd baseman playing in pretty far. Shitty break.

Well, that's what everyone wanted to hear. Makes sense to me.

Why mainieri gets paid the big bucks if gamble pays off he's a genius for allowing a great senior hitter hit also if he lays the bunt down and the next 2 hitters come up and get out how many people would of been bitching about bunting raph just my opinion it's how society works today wait and see outcome then grip about it

Game 1 of the CWS is no time to "gamble". That shite is for midweek games in march. Call it 20/20 hindsight or whatever you want, but in that situation you play by the book. I hope maineiri had fun pretending to be rainman because now we have serious issues

that sounds like a good decision that came up snake eyes.

CPM knew what he was doing there. It just turned out bad.

Sounds reasonable to me. The man is a great baseball coach and knows more about baseball than anyone on this site....combined. Took a chance and it didn't work. It happens.

No other thoughts should have been necessary.

Huh?

I guess he's been watching a different Mason Katz for 4 years, because as superb an overall player as the young man is, baserunning is definitely his Achilles heel.

So according to Maineiri when the count went to 2-0 something in the game altered. Was the score still the same? Was it still the bottom of the ninth? What changed? Nothing changed.

quote:

They must have been playing on the line

Its the bottom of the ninth of a one run game. Everyone, with the possible exception of Maineiri knew UCLA was guarding the lines. Unbelieveable he would even say such a thing.

I've long said CPM is an outstanding coach between games but is horrible as a bench coach as things are unfurling.

kind of troubling. all we needed was a run. we didnt need a "big inning"

unless a big inning is just implying that we tie the game at the least

Base hit by Raph and we're celebrating a win. Baseball just is that way.

I honestly thought Jacoby was going to win that game. oh well. We can fight out of the losers bracket. We did it in the SEC tourney.

Why do so many LSU fans turn on the Head Coach so much? I've never seen a program victimize their head coach as much as LSU fans do.

Anybody bitching about the hit and run with Rhymes doesn't know shite about baseball.
