Ok, so I understand that Spain is pretty divided in regards to their regional pride, i.e. the Basques and Catalans.

What I need further explanation is how does this affect the way Spaniards view the national team. As far as I know, the Basques seem to be the most stringent in their views - Bilbao attempting to create an entire Basque squad.

Real Sociedad had the policy of Basques or non-Spaniards right? Is that still something they hold on to?

Do the Basques not root for the national team at all? Is there any shot we'll ever see a FIFA sanctioned Catalan or Basque national team? Which would be more likely?

Muchas gracias.

Everybody´s typically got homegrown or provincially grown talent, with a few exceptions.

Your larger clubs raid the smaller, who many times have feeder and loan agreements.

Each province or autonomous community has their ´selección´, the two you mention, are two of the larger and more ´mediáticos´.

So do the Basques have an anti-national team attitude in general or is that exaggerated?

I wasn't aware of this. I do know Athletic Bilbao only sign ethnically Basque players and players from the Basque country.

Real Sociedad has Carlos Vela but maybe they allow one exception to line up the post match strippers.

The policy that I'm referring to was the only Spanish players they'd allow were Basques. The rest would be foreign.

Yeah, I had never heard of it either, but I think you're right. They have plenty of foreigners and Spanish players, but basically every single Spanish player is from the Basque region or has an obviously Basque name and had parents who moved out of the region.

Seems silly that they would openly discriminate against Spanish players from the rest of the country, while it's okay to get players from Serbia, Turkey, Mexico, and other places where 99 percent of the population doesn't even know what the Basque region is.

Are Basque Country and Catalonia the only 2 regions with "national" teams?

Also, you live in Spain, right? Just curious

Also, the Basque country extends to part of France. That's why Bixente Lizarazu (sp?) was able to play for Athletic Bilbao.

Sure, but Kovacevic, Nihat, and Vela are as Basque as you, me, or Franco.

Bilbao sticks with the Basque-only rule for all players (although not managers), but I don't get the point of what Sociedad is trying.

I read something about the origins of the Atleti and Sociedad rivalry. Apparently an Atleti fan stabbed a Sociedad to death and now they chant about it at games.

Sweet Baby Jesus.

Atleti was caught cheating, or intending to cheat, using foreign players, back in 1900 or so, by Real Sociedad.

They then backed out of using them (the ´ringers´they were bringing from England), and the equivalent of the Spanish federation was never able to prove their culpability.

The club since then has played only with Basque players, and has held a grudge with La Real, ever since.

Atlético de Madrid, not Athletic de Bilbao. That happened in 1998.

They aren´t rivals.

Yeah, there could be some chants, from ultras on both sides.

Yeah I know, that's why I said Atleti and not Athletic. Apparently there is a rivalry between the club's ultras.
