Any FDBers have one of the offset or uprights smokers made by old country BBQ pits from academy?

It seems to be made of all 1/4" or 3/16 metal......I've seen conflicting info on the thickness.

I have a kamado but my dad is in the market for a grill/smoker. It seems like a damn solid grill for $399.

I don't have one, but have looked at them, seem pretty solid

Was just at Academy looking at grills. Those were easily the sturdiest looking charcoal grills I've seen at the local stores (Home Depot, Ace, Lowe's, etc.). Nice heavy gauge steel. No comments on how well they work, but they seemed to be made well.

They seemed damn sturdy for a big box store to carry. Those chargrillers and gourmet grills they have are garbage.

Pull up the Franklin BBQ videos on YouTube and that is the backyard pit he is using.

No reason not to get it. If Papa CBLSU316 wants a big nice damn grill, then by all means get it.

Easy to keep a steady temp on them?

I had one of these and it was definitely rock solid. Only issues I had with mine is that it was difficult to keep a steady temp. I ended up selling it to a friend and buying a WSM.

He has no issues maintaining temp and makes some incredible BBQ on it. So apparently it was user error.

I bought the New Braunfels Hondo and it works like a charm...the Old County ones look like just a step above them. Would recommend

This thread intrigues me. I love my Weber Performer and with the smokenator attachment I've smoked on it with no problems. However, I've thought about getting a barrel pit with a smoke box or just buying a stand alone smoker. I'm still up in the air on it. When I'm back on my feet I'll head to Academy and check these out.
