High school pitchers and the cut fastball

My son is a pitcher on his HS baseball team and I have been teaching him how to throw a cutter. He is getting the hang of it and it worked really well tonight. He tells me his coach doesn't want him to throw it. I say throw it in certain situations. What says the OT?

Isn't it just a fastball with different pressure on the seams?
Does the coach allow curves and sliders?

Not a bad pitch. Throw it occasionally

As long as it doesn't frick his arm up, which I don't think a cutter would go for it.

Does it get outs? If so throw it. If he throws hard mix in some 4-seam fast balls to please the scouts.

When he throws it he seems to get strikes, but h doesn't throw it much at all, maybe 2-3 times/game because he wants to ind the coach. I told him easier tonight to throw it with an 0-0 count and see what happens. The coach won't know the difference.

The coach just wants strikes, but I've always heard and said..."if you can throw strikes you don't need to throw strikes every pitch".

Oh I thought he may have been worried about his arm.
If I could go back in time I definitely would have thrown more 2 seam, cutters, and change ups. I only wanted to throw 4 seam fastballs. Teach the kid movement and change of speed. If he works on it he will throw them for strikes.

I don't think coach is worried bout the arm. I think he's about 28yo and just wants basic fundamental shite. I on the other hand have been watching and coaching my sons for 22 yrs and this the last one to play...bla bla bla. Anyway he has control but not much speed, I thought the cutter would be a good pitch and it seems like it is...thanks

Thanks, my thoughts exactly.

Not many HS pitchers are throwing cut fastballs, but it has nothing to do with the pitch being ineffective or worrying about their arm. I just think it's one of the last pitches that pitchers add to their repertoire. If your son can throw a good one, then go for it, especially if he doesn't have a blazing fastball. Have him fool around with different pressures to see if he can get sharp cuts left and right without losing too much velocity.

It appears to be a great pitch if you have decent control and it seems to work for him. It must be coaches aren't familiar with it.

I think you should let his coach, you know, coach the team.

It's not sexy, but if coaches taught kids to master change-ups they would be making kids look absolutely silly. There's also next to no damage on your arm.
It's the perfect high school pitch.

throw a cutter
If thrown properly it will look like a fastball with a tail at the end. It was my best pitch in HS. Very easy to disguise unlike a curve ball. Keep throwing it, plus it wont tear up his arm. Used to rotate the cutter and the curve all the time

what coach would not want his pitcher to throw a cut fastball? what an idiot.

Cutters can be very effective pitches. Now, maybe the coach doesn't think he has a good one and that's why he doesn't want him to throw it. It's just high school baseball, if your son wants to throw a cutter I see no problem with it.
