Orange beach and whatever will bite to help me pass the time ( specs, sheepshead, reds, whatever else I find)

Thinking about buying a popping cork rig with some gulp shrimp or just buying a pound of shrimp from somewhere and bouncing it on the bottom

artificial bait is too much work in the surf IMO... you need a rod holder so that you can put some shrimp or cut bait on the bottom and then crack a beer and wait for something to happen.

Orange beach

Dead shrimp, pyramid weight on the bottom with a hook a foot or 2 above it, cheap spinning reel. Will catch a bunch of hard heads, maybe some whiting, maybe pompano. With cut bait maybe a small shark. Nothing will be sizable. But t passes the time.

How many oz weight and circle hook or treble? Getting an Academy list together

Have some spoons. Would those work?

I tried surf fishing for the first time last year while on vacation in gulf shores. I got bored and bought a $20 spinning combo at walmarks and went at it. I told myself I was fishing for pompano when I started. I caught some ladyfish and catfish. THEN, I CAUGHT A POMPANO! Just like I'd planned it! You've never seen anyone more proud than I was that day.

Teach me your ways!

I havent surf fished since I was a kid at GI. Will probably try several different methods. Even considered putting a sand crab on there and slinging it out there. Apparantly i def need a spinning rod. Was gonna try my 7' bass rig with 50# braid but that may be a pita

i wouldn't want to put a baitcaster in the surf. don't want to get that shite eaten up. that and the occasional backlash won't be fun up to you chest

Kahle hook, weight doesn't really matter enough to keep it on the bottom and give you some distance, 1/4 or 1/2 oz is good.

I never tried artificial but not sure how well they'd work. At least out there.

Hoping i dont have to wade out to far since I aint a real strong swimmer. Will probably just find a cheap spinning compo somewhere along the way

at least 1oz, I'd prolly go 2oz. Get some decent size circle hooks and some shrimp or mullet. If you can't find mullet, just try and catch some bait with the shrimp and cut it up. I don't normally like using artificials in the surf. I'm there to drink and relax. Decent shot at catching a small shark or red even.

ETA - buy a cheap PVC rod holder to stick into the sand. Keeps your rod high and the line out of the breaking waves.

Love it when a plan comes together like that!

Is what I used when I went to Ft. Morgan. I caught a bunch of lady fish. Popping cork worked, but I seemed to do better just casting, jigging, and speed reeling the gulp on a jig head back to me with no cork. Try all the different retrievs and see what works best...

New penny and glow with a chatreuse tail worked best.

I climbed the rocks once to try to catch bull reds or sharks in the pass. Caught an assload of ladyfish and hardheads.

I use a Wal Marks throwaway spinning setup down there with the triangle weight on bottom and hook on top. Usually catch anything on octopus just letting it sit out there. I have caught sharks (at night only), huge stingray, ladyfish, 1 flounder, and a ton of those bastard catfish. Headed down there in August so please give report when you go.
