re: The Importance of Camp Evaluations and Offers

I think in that situation I would urge my kid to go to the schools that have offered. I think initially he can have a list of schools that he considers favorites based on location, academics, prestige, etc, etc. But when the offers start coming in I think he should rerank and prioritize that list according to those schools he has legit offers from.

Id rather guys like this. Weve seen players in the past get butt hurt about having to earn their offer. Let those kids go to another school. This is the kind of kid that will continue to work his butt off to get better.

Film should be the number 1 determining factor IMO.
Not every hs has hd cams filming these kids. Plenty of kids have film that is barely watchable.
If the coaches want you to come to camp, and you like that school, why not?

I didn't say the offers where contingent on him camping...Let me clarify, he was talking to the coaches about his greatest fear...which is to be in a situation where he and the position coach is not compatible. They asked him to camp with them to gauge their style
I'd probably leave it up to my kid based on that circumstance. If the school that hasn't offered is his dream, I'd probably have a discussion with the staff to find out if an offer can truly be earned, or is he likely to be caught up in a numbers game. If he is equally excited about the school that has offered, tell the other school that you're going there for camp but you're open to making other arrangements if they decide they want to continue to pursue your kid.

why not
Cost has to factor in at some point. Not everyone can drop the money it takes to go to all of these camps. I know my parents would not have been able to send me to more than 1 or 2 back in the day.

Then you better get your arse to a camp.

I never had any delusions of grandeur. I played because my Dad was 5'2" and didn't break 100lbs until his senior year. All of his kids were forced to play.
I'm just saying if you were a legit 3 star type player looking to get offers, cost has to factor into the camps you choose. If 6-7 schools are really interested in you, you would have to choose which camps you could actually attend.

This was my point to my friend...why waste time and money on the bird in the bush when you have two in hand.

How much did Top Gun camp cost you total for gas/food/hotel/camp fee? That was just 1 camp. I'm sure LSU wasn't bad because you live in Baton Rouge so I wanted to pick one far away to get an estimate on what these parents are spending each time you venture out.

Traveling does cost a lot. Gas, food, lodging, rental cars, camp costs can easily get up into the thousands of dollars. Now think about this...since January we have traveled to Nashville, Memphis, Alabama, Texas, and Mississippi(a few of these places we have been to several times) all football related, The kid still wants to go Back to Bama and LSU's camps in July...my pockets are screaming bloody murder!

Plus the week in San Antonio in January.

And to think you still have over 3 years left of this.

I hear ya and it is probably a good idea to be picky about which ones to go to, while at the same time providing your son with a lot of opportunities. But at the same time, it is a pretty awesome problem to have.

Just tell him he's going to LSU and you will buy him a car with the money you save from not traveling to the other schools.
