The food at the Bulldog is pretty good and reasonable, Hulkk ..

That's true. I mean, it's great that they have food and if I need to sober up I can grab some, but overall I'm not one to care much about the food served at a bar. That being said, PH is more of a fancy date kind of place, whereas BD is just a good hangout spot. I will concede and agree that BD has a better beer lineup, though.

The point was that you can be a top beer bar with only a few quality taps.

Actually, BR may have more "beer" bars per capita than Rome.

What I Meant was that Goose Island that I was enjoying in Chicago a couple of decades ago for instance, is just now making its way here.

That has more to do with ABInBev buying Goose Island than anything, but I get the point you're trying to make.

There certainly aren't that many with a huge tap line up
That huge tap line up isn't a very impressive lineup. It's good for BR but not all that.

Soon hopefully. If the Tigers take care of business tonight, maybe we can crack a few tomorrow and celebrate.

They have a wide selection, but not anywhere great, imo. Looking at their tap list, they have 50 or so beers, 19 of which are craft beers (5 of those 19 being Abita), and I argue half of the remaining craft beers are less than average. So that puts us at about 15% of their taps being average to above average.

I just left there. I couldn't even find anything I really wanted on draught. I ended up drinking Hopitoulas.

Their rotating tap last was hilariously putrid.

That or canebrake are the only thing to drink there.

Last time I was there the tap selection sucked. The rotating taps were a cider, a Leinenkugel berry beer, and a Third Shift beer. Are you kidding me?

They were out of Hopitoulas too.

I get canebrake or hitachino nest white at chimes.

I agree their selection sucks.

(Hitachino is in bottle)

I was there recently and Envie was on tap (but on neither menu), so I ordered a few. I ended up with the same waitress and when I asked if they had Envie she said she had never heard of it.

PH is a cool place for BR, I hope they're successful, but I don't love it. It's too sterile for me...too much white and gray, feels like they're puttin on airs with their nouveau decor. They go to a lot of effort to make their food sound really good on the menu, but i think it's average at best. I really liked their gravy fries, but everything else I've had defines "meh"...mac n cheese, buffalo frog legs, gator, burger, and the beer braised turkey and pork belly sandwich (which tasted like store bought turkey and ridiculously over cooked bacon). And while I like the cleavage of their bartenders, the fact that they know so little about the beer is annoying.

I so much prefer The Bulldog. I like the wood and exposed brick, and the comfortable feel of the place, the bartenders know their product, their food is better. I don't know enough about Rome to comment on how their beer selection compares to The Bulldog, but I know the Bulldog has plenty of stuff that I dig on.

Not defending staff being uninformed because its definitely something they should know about, but if you don't have beer nerds chomping at the bit to work for you, you have to make do with what you have. I'm sure they'd love to have good looking chicks in mini skirts who ALSO know a ton about beer but that's just not realistic. They should certainly give their staff more training but its inevitable rotating beers will fall through the cracks when your waitress probably drinks cranberry-vodkas in her free time.
